Catholic preschools/schools- LEGAL question
Do catholic preschools/schools need to follow NYS regulations regarding student to staff ratios?
I love my sons pre-k school and teacher but he is in aftercare for about 40 minutes and I hate it (so does he).
There are way too many kids/per staff member and I have some safety concerns.
Working on a plan B and I emailed the director and principal but I was just curious if legally they were able to do what ever they want in a catholic school?
Thanks !!!

Catholic preschools/schools- LEGAL question
My kids go to a church based preschool and yes, they follow ratios. I'm not sure if it's bc they legally have to--but I would think for safety reasons it would be law across the board.

I would speak to the school before you contact OCFS.

OCFS does not monitor preschools/before and after care that is in session less than 4 hours a day.

I was going to ask this. I’m in NJ and aftercare/before care is a free for all. My DS old school was a chaotic mess, we lucked out that this school is better. Aftercare is also a lot cheaper than regular sitter so I feel like I get what I paid for.

Really? I work in a middle school and the community-run before school program (1 hr daily) gets check ins and regulated by them

That doesn't make sense. I have a friend who is a licenser. Any preschool longer than two and a half hours must be licensed. How can before/after care be less than four and not regulated?

I was basing my response on the fact that she had already contacted the school and the principal.

I thought private schools (religious or not) weren't eligible for state funding since they don't follow state curriculum/instruction guidelines. Their schools are funded by donations and the tuition costs passed onto the families that enroll. No?

They don’t get funded like a public school but they do get limited funding.

Catholic preschools/schools- LEGAL question
Is it aftercare for just preschool or for elementary levels too? The ratios are a lot different for "aftercare" than a daycare program.

Re: Catholic preschools/schools- LEGAL question
Thanks for all the responses....
It is aftercare for pre-k. They have aftercare for elementary kids too at the same time but they are separated.
I have spoken to the director and the principal. They were both rude and obnoxious and avoided all of my "issues" until I asked if catholic schools were required to follow the NYS regulations for student to staff ratios.
When I picked my son up the day I sent the emails it was MUCH better. Hoping it lasts.
Thank you!
