Winthrop or Katz North shore for delivery? Plz don’t move!

Old poster here but forgot my password. ??

Had my first at S Nassau and didn’t have the best experience. Felt as if the nurses were very rough around the edges with care (didnt seem too compassionate, not delivering pain meds on time after emergency c section, refused to take baby to nursery aftern I explained that the drugs/lack of sleep after 24 hour labor were making me drowsy, etc)

So I want a new hospital. Please share experiences with wither winthrop or NS. The only thing I liked about S Nassau was the private room. Nervous about sharing a room but I could get past that if care was better in other areas. Thanks!

I delivered at North Shore 2 years ago. No complaints. They encouraged me to send the baby to the nursery. Private rooms were gorgeous and huge.

I delivered at NS a little over a year ago and had a great experience. Clean, private room, nurses and lactation consultants were great!

I had a great experience at Winthrop and hope to deliver there again. I found them very warm and I really appreciated how everything was handled. My son was placed on my chest before I was wheeled out of the OR and given his first bath right in front of me. I was afraid things wouldn’t be handled as gently being a csection mom but I felt they really made me feel like I didn’t miss much having not delivered him naturally. During my stay, most nurses were excellent. I only had one I didn’t like but having BTDT I’d know how to handle that now. I also found the LC useless but I hear that’s the case everywhere pretty much. Besides that, I had no complaints and recently switched to a doctor who delivers out of Winthrop since mine switched to north shore.

love winthrop- heard good things with northshore too, but have heard some complaints about the nurses there not being too nice. I've only delivered at winthrop, and was very happy with the nurses there. They were super nice and helpful and not pushy at all.

I delivered at Winthrop 3 times. If my doctor went to NS, I would choose NS for the private rooms. You will find some staff nicer than others anywhere you go.
I didn't take pain meds after delivery, but from other experiences at Winthrop (and elsewhere), they have a window they come by and if you're due for meds they give them. And, sometimes I had to remind them when they come by that it's time.
I've heard about Winthrop not taking babies to the nursery, but I've always seen babies in the nursery (when I accompany baby for tests).

I delivered at Winthrop 2x. Like the PP said if my doctor had privileges at NS i would have gone there hands down. Both times I had to share a room. It didnt seem like a big deal but once you are post partum, bleeding heavily, exhausted, etc you just want to be alone. The first time wasnt so bad. I had another mom in the room who needed rest and quiet. She sent her baby to the nursery from 11pm-6am. She had very few visitors like myself. Very respectful. The second time I was put in a room with someone who kept the baby with them full time. Was trying to breastfeed for the first time. The baby was screaming non stop bc it was starving. I do not judge others but when you are forced into the same room as someone else their choices become your own. This person had more guests than anyone. It was insane. Groups and groups of people all day AND all night. There was a group of friends til after 10pm. That experience was horrendous. I went home feeling terrible.

Delivered both my kids at north shore and had great experiences both time. I didn't breast feed and sent my kids to the nursery and the nursers were very supportive of my choices.

This was me exactly. I had one nurse push back a little about the breastfeeding Kept telling me it was “the natural way.” I just had an elective c-section lady, do I strike you as a natural kind of girl?

Delivered at Winthrop about 2 years ago. The rooms were far from new, but I couldn't have asked for better nursing care even though it was very busy at the time.

Winthrop or Katz North shore for delivery? Plz don’t move!

Delivered at North Shore for all 3 and I couldn't be happier! Huge private rooms, the most thorough and comprehensive care, and the best NICU just in case. I loved that I roomed in right away. I didn't breast feed but I wasn't forced to, either! No pressure... I just told them I was pumping and they helped me get started and left me alone.

Loved NS. Room was like a hotel. Nurses were so nice. No problems with getting meds (I was on a lot of meds after my csection with my twins for the pain-they were so nice). Super helpful and encouraging with breastfeeding but did not push. All 3 of my kids went to nursery at night and I told them they could have formula for feedings as I wanted to sleep. Great NICU (one of my twins was in there for 2 days) and amazing specialists for everything (we thought there was an issue with his foot-but the top orthopedist came in and examined him and said he was fine).

Re: Winthrop or Katz North shore for delivery? Plz don’t move!

LOVED northshore manhasset. Everyone on staff was incredibly nice. Beautiful rooms and bathrooms. Good food. The people who come around in the morning to take your blood pressure could sometimes be a little gruff, but they work the whole hospital and not just the maternity ward. Lol my friend and I recently commented that we’d have another kid just to stay there again! I appreciated that I never ever ever was made to feel guilty about not breastfeeding and about wanting to put my dds in the nursery overnight. I know a lot of people like Winthrop but every singe person I know who was there felt bullied if they didn’t want to breastfeed and/or send the baby back for the night. In more than one case, the dh had to become involved to grant the mothers wish. If you plan on breastfeeding and keeping your baby with you then it probably is a moot point anyways, but just an FYI. I have several friends who will NOT deliver there in the future for this reason.

I had both kids at Katz and had great experiences. To me, it feels less “hospitalish” Chat Icon which made me feel a little more relaxed for my stay. Large delivery rooms and nice sized private rooms for your stay.

I’ve recently visited 2 people who delivered at Winthrop and while they had great experiences, they had to share a small room and there wasn’t much privacy.

Both are great hospitals though. I wouldn’t choose my Dr solely on the hospital, but if I had a choice, I’d go with Katz.

Just wanted to say in all fairness, in my experience having delivered there, I was a breastfeeding mom but was ENCOURAGED to send my baby to the nursery because I was visibly very tired and needed the rest. I actually resisted and didn’t want to, but a nurse convinced me to do it.

As in most cases, everyone’s experiences will vary. I can’t speak for the breastfeeding issue, but as far as the nursery is concerned being bullied about sending him there wasn’t my experience at all. It was actually the opposite!

My 3 best friends have delivered 5 babies at Katz. It's a beautiful hospital and they all were very happy there. One of the babies was in the NICU and they were happy with the care there as well. If I didn't live so far away, I would deliver there.

I delivered two babies at Winthrop. I felt the nurses were mostly wonderful. However, by the time I gave birth to my second, there was a very visible shift in their mentality regarding breast feeding and rooming in. As an example, I have a very bad reaction to anesthesia. After any surgery I vomit for hours and hours afterward. It's awful and it's especially painful when a c section is involved. The first night I was insistent that the baby go to the nursery. My husband was home with my first child, and I didn't feel it was a good idea to keep the baby overnight. I actually had to walk the baby down to the nursery and demand it. It made me think twice about delivering there again.

Love Katz so much! I had my son there before the new wing opened and he was in the NICU which I love. I then had my daughter and son in thew new Katz wing after. It is beautiful, relaxing and the nurses are great. I sent my son to the nursery for a few nights since I knew I would be coming home to two other kids. I love the private rooms, I love that my husband and family can all fit in the room and visit with space. I never got pressured to breastfeed, they never spoke to me about it. They basically left you alone unless you needed them.
