Re: Communion party question
I would have loved to do bigger communion parties for my kids but it's not in my budget and staying within my budget is a priority.
My DS will have a party in my house just like my DD had 2 years ago. I did go a little overboard on her dress, but his suit was given to me by a friend so I consider that balance. LOL. I spent $55 on his shoes and socks. I'll buy him another shirt because the one that came with the suit is too tight on his neck, but otherwise he's done and I saved a bunch.
People do go WAY over the top nowadays, but I feel like the go over the top for everything so I'm not surprised. The limo, though - now that is something I haven't heard of before. That's insane.

Communion party question
I had a big communion party for my daughter because I wanted to and we could afford it. I have a big family, so I couldn't do it at home. But, we didn't splurge on the dress or anything else. We bought the dress and veil at Burlington Coat Factory for about $40. I just combed her hair like normal and stuck the veil on her head.
When she was born, I realized that she would receive Communion about a month before I turned 50. So, I was either going to throw myself a 50th birthday or a communion party for her. I chose the party for her.

Re: Communion party question
We will be having a party with close family and friends (85 ppl) at a rental hall, catering in food.
I wouldn't consider it over the top. We will have entertainment for kids (a magician).
We had my first DD's in a private room at a restaurant. Costs will be similar.

Re: Communion party question
We went out to dinner with my sister and my uncle. No big party. I didn't even do it for his baptism. We went out to dinner at a very nice restaurant with the god parents and my nieces. I used the money to go to Aruba instead lol.

Re: Communion party question
We are not having a huge party but did invite family only and have about 65 people. For us, this is a very big day for our child. We are practicing Catholics who attend church every week and our child is beyond excited for the sacrament. We want to celebrate it because it is a big deal to us.

Communion party question
My communion party was in the private room of a bar (that I still go to when I'm home, btw). I remember my parents only had beer and wine and someone opened a tab at the bar and they were furious. That's literally all I remember from it.
Everyone I know now has HUGE communions, christenings, etc. To each their own, but DD is going to be SOL in a few years when her party is in the backyard!

Re: Communion party question
I had huge parties for my sons at places that host weddings. Probably about 100 people at each one. My boys chose the color scheme and the favors and made lists of games they wanted the DJ to play. Both parties were lots of fun and worth the time, money and effort they took to plan. We also got to spend time with extended family and friends we don't normally get to see. I totally get it if this isn't your idea of a communion celebration, but those of us who do celebrate this way are entitled to enjoy our parties without being made to feel like we've done something wrong.

I have no issues with the huge parties. What I find distributing is mini brides in what looks like wedding gowns rather than communion dresses, people hiring limos to take them to the church, again like a wedding, people coming into church as guests and talking throughout the mass, taking selfies, being utterly disrespectful and having no idea that the meaning of the day is what is taking place in that church....while they impatiently wait to go drink at the big party afterwards. I see this every year at my church as they do the communions during regular mass.

We are not rasing our girls catholic so no communion for them but my dd is in 2nd grade and invited to 2 parties. Both are at wedding halls. I really like the moms and the girls but they are making this like a wedding. One even had a say yes to the communion dress day for her dd and invited her family to come see her try on dresses after she had a hair trial done. Back in the day when I had my communion my parents had family over in the backyard. Just like a lot of things these days everything has to be BIGGER and BETTER.

Re: Communion party question
I have seen that too. Dd's best friend went to some dress salon and her mom posted pics of her holding a I said yes to the dress sign and a video where they asked her... "Xxx, do you say yes to this dress?" And she said yes abd held up the sign and everyone cheered. Just like the show. Child brides. Creepy.

Re: Communion party question
I want to add that I am catholic and we do go to church. I am just not into the big parties, I don’t even have parties for my son every year. He’s had 3 for his birthday 2, 5 and 8 (only because I was emotional over the Hoboken train incident).
I like to travel, so I rather spend money on that. I think it’s what is important to people. However, I think limos and mini weddings is ridiculous - sorry.

Wtf? That is bizarre.
I wouldn’t even think to take DD to a store for a dress. That’s what the internet is for.

Exactly. I wouldn't even have the foggiest idea where to go buy a communion dress . I googled Communion Dresses and a website came up that looked great and was affordable and I was like...ok done!

Communion party question
We have a small family. We are having a lunch of about 25 people in a private room in a restaurant. We are hiring a magician (very reasonable) and I am doing my own centerpieces and favors. I love doing all that stuff. If I had a bigger family I'm sure I would've had it at a hall. For my family, baptisms and communions are very important. We did take my daughter shopping for her dress because she is so picky and hates anything too frilly.

Communion party question
My daughter’s will be at a firehouse that I reserved for $75 because my friend’s husband is a volunteer there. We will have about 75 people. There will be some splurges like her dress (my mom treated and a dj (still reasonable) and some things that won’t be a lot (cake from Costco) and Dollar Store photo centerpieces. I probably could have had it at a private room in a restaurant for the same cost if I omitted a lot of the guest list. However, I’m inviting family and friends who we wouldn’t otherwise see if not for the communion. And since my father’s untimely death spending time with loved ones is important to me. So I’m happy with my choice.

Re: Communion party question
I am having a joint party with my brother since my oldest niece is doing her communion the week after DS.
We are having it at a local restaurant right after the church and we just invited our families, no friends.

I so agree with everything you wrote. The parties that some of these parents threw for their kids last year were mini weddings. The outfits that the mothers show up wearing in church are over the top. There is one mom in DS's class who asked me where I was getting my hair and make-up done? I was like 'at home??" She has two dresses, one for the church and a floor length gown for the 'reception' later that evening at Russo's. I was like Yea, have a nice time...'
Our church has noted that any girl showing up in any make-up whats so ever, even if its lip gloss will be asked to have the make-up removed before she can join the other children in church. The same thing for shoes, absolutely NO heels. The parents will be called to the recreational center to bring another pair of shoes if an inappropriate heel height is being worn. I just couldn't believe some of the gasps that were being given when it was announced. Why do you want your kid looking like a small adult??

I don't think this is really that big of deal or stretch. Like I said, I don't throw huge parties. However, if I was throwing a party or attending one at a hall - I would get my hair done at a salon. Make up, I can manage on my own, but again not a stretch to get it done if you are hosting a formal party.
Also I know in my family we like to dress sexy and I can see someone wearing a suit for the church and another dress for the hall. Idk about a gown but if you're already going balls out for a party, is it really a stretch to wear a gown. lol

That’s crazy!! My communion dress was the same one my sister wore 2 years prior (and probably from JC Penney) and my party was hot dogs and hamburgers grilled in the backyard. My parents possibly splurged for potato salad from the corner deli
Lol. I was in JCP the other day and saw some pretty communion dresses. My first thought was this is where my dd is getting her dress from in a couple of years.
