Counting calories is important Free foods are nonsense. Nothing is free. If it has calories you count it.

If I told my coach I ate this, that, and the other because its "free", He'd kill me. I also would not get the results I do by following a stricter plan.

I compete in bodybuilding shows so of course I have to be a little stricter than somebody who does not but still the whole idea of "free" foods especially fruits blows my mind. They are mostly high carb foods.

Edited because I just re read some. Turkey chili is zero because turkey is zero? and beans are zero? and corn?

First of all corn is terrible for you. its the most highly sprayed crop on the market, second beans are very high carb, and lastly turkey has fat and protein. How is any of that zero points. Again, non sense.

This is what I always wanted to wrap my head around. Maybe I am not getting something though because I never did it so I can't really speak from experience or total knowledge of the plan as a whole.
But how are fruits no points? Fruit is full of sugar and carbs. I just found out recently since DH started his journey that a banana has something like 14 grams of sugar.
Crazy town. I never knew that.
So I never understood that either.
But again, I might be missing something they teach you when you are on the plan. Because people do drop weight on it, so it must work, kwim?

I think it works because when you get a choice of banana of 14 grams of natural sugars vs. cupcake with XX amount of processed sugars, and you pick the banana, it IS a healthier choice.
the plan works for people who eat processed sugary junk food, and all of a sudden switch to less processed more natural foods.
i know the plan is too restrictive and time-consuming for me. It also does not have all the ethnic foods i eat. but it works for others to lsoe the initial weight.
i'd love to know how good they are at keeping it off for 5, 10, 15+ years though.

Correct. Compared to the average American diet this IS the healthier option to keep people healthy and avoid chronic illness! It’s about “clean” eating, cook at home, eat your fruits veggies and lean proteins. Pretty simple and straightforward. Can’t compare this to those who eat all organic, vegan, raw, paleo, keto, etc. Its more for how to live your life and enjoy food in moderation

Exactly, it what works best for the person and some diets like the keto and paleo are too rigid for many. And if you don’t normally diet or count calories it’s going to be hard for a person to understand.

Re: Weight Watchers Freestyle

I'll caveat this with I now follow a paleo diet 90% of the time (which is common amongst paleo followers, otherwise it's not realistically sustainable.) But I did WW for many years and lost my baby weight within 4 months both times on it. So I don't disagree that it is effective for weight loss. That said I don't think I did it in a healthy way. I was just focused on weight and was basically "skinny fat." There are articles that say this is as dangerous (or moreso because it's deceiving) than being overweight.

I think plans like paleo etc focus on the nutrients and balance of macros in the diet which is IMO a healthier mindset than thinking in points (and I used to also!) MFP is great for that and free.

What I don't like is the commercials put so much emphasis on getting skinny while still eating unhealthy foods and not necessarily healthy. My kids were perplexed the other day and said that lady is eating a cupcake. how is that a healthy choice? But that's not just WW. I just wish there was more emphasis in general on eating to be strong and healthy not just thin as a model for kids. Obviously to each their own though and if you eat cleaner as a result of this program, then I think that's great! I get that my lifestyle doesn't work for everyone and vice versa.

From what I remember you are a vegan paleo correct? Has this been a sustainable lifestyle for you?

WW programs are always piloted and tested by scientists. It’s evidence based for sustained weight loss and weight maintenance. The foods that are zero points are nutrient dense and not foods that are likely to be over eaten. Members are having success. It’s one option for a lifelong diet plan that’s proven to work year after year. Like any change in health practices people should talk to their doctor and other clinical experts (not necessarily coaches).

My coach is a dietitian. He is a bodybuilding coach not a beachbody or other gimmick coach and my lifestyle is extremely sustainable

That’s my point. Most people who are having success are not body builders and your goals may be extreme compared to what others desire. You have certain results you want to see and that works for you. Not fair to call this program nonsense.

I think you both just have two different concepts of "success." One is building strength and one is being thin. Neither is wrong even though I tend to lean more towards the building strength side.

I agree about the concept of telling people certain foods are free. Every food has calories and fat and carbs and macros that should somehow be tracked and considered so they are balanced. "Free" implies none of that matters and it does for nutritional purposes regardless of whether the end result is losing weight.

For example, beans are "free." Beans contain phytic acid which binds to nutrients in the food preventing you from absorbing them. which makes it a lot less nutrient-dense than the nutrition facts panel indicates. Does it make eating beans wrong? No. Should you eat large quantities of them because WW says they are "free"? No but in theory you could eat unlimited amounts on this plan. So it almost seems irresponsible to me to imply that just because the end result is weight loss if that makes any sense.

Weight Watchers Freestyle

I think the program is trying to get people to make healthier choices by introducing the 0 pt foods. When I first started when they started points - it was less points to eat Hostess fat free cupcakes than a banana so obviously - one chose cupcakes.

By making these foods 0 points, they reduced the number of points you get a day by 7-13.

And by eating these free foods - it helps me not want to eat as many sweets.

And unless you eat these items plain or steamed - with no sauces - these items end up incurring points (so grilled unmarinated chicken and steamed veggies is 0 points but, if you add ketchup, etc - it adds up!) And they raised points on items such as sweets.

Also - yes you can have cake and cupcakes but, a piece of cake equals the amount of points I get for a day so it's not something that's feasible daily. But, it's ok to eat occasionally.

I've had success over the month - I'm bad at weighing myself daily (because I need to see some progress to keep myself working) and it's been up and down but, I've lost 6 lbs in a month.

Re: Weight Watchers Freestyle

I gave freestyle a good shot but I gained consistently. In order to make my daily blue dot, I had to eat MORE than I usually ate. Because almost all of the food I normally ate and counted became 0 points on the new plan.

People are making 7 SP Cheesecakes and eating the whole thing. 4 egg omelettes and calling them FREE - it's backfiring. A lot. And forget about the fact that the whole reason a lot of people join WW is because they have trouble with portions. The more 0 pt foods you offer, the less they learn to control their portions.

I rigged the app to bring me back to 30 sp a day and am counting the free items by adding them in manually. I started on Monday and my weigh in day is Friday. So we'll see what 4 full days back on the old plan has done. I definitely feel better, I'm full and satisfied.

If anyone is feeling this way about freestyle, there is a FB group called:

Return to 30 (Beyond the Scale)

It's up to almost 7,000 members.
All people who tried their best with freestyle and put on weight. Some of those people over indulged in 0 pt food, some were like me and had to eat more to make daily goals and some said that they were starving with the point reduction because they don't/can't eat most of the food that was now 0. Plugging their daily food into myfitnesspal told them they were eating under 1,000 Calories a day trying to stay within their blue dot goal.

It just doesn't work for everyone

This will probably be my last comment because nobody seems to want to read or listen, not just you, but most on this thread. WW DOES NOT EVEN SAY THE WORDS FREE FOOD! That is not part of the literature. The plan is called Freestyle, but they are not saying that foods are free! Yes, everybody with a bit of a brain in their head knows that all calories count, and besides water, pretty much everything has calories. The thought process is, NOBODY is going to eat a pound of grilled chicken at one sitting, or 5 heads of brocolli, they are just tools to bulk up your meals. Also, yes it is better to have an extra egg a day or 2 ounces of chicken or fish, than a cupcake, sleeve of cookies or other junk.

I think different diets work for different people. I am not a dessert person (haven’t had anything sweet in about a month), but a savory person. I deal with that and count my macros and calories.

That being said, I think WW is probably the best diet program out there. If you take a look at the others, then you will see they aren’t sustainable. I really think it is about portion control. But that’s what works for me.

I’m a savory person too.. I would prefer a fat juicy cheeseburger over a piece of cake. Where as my husband loves sweets, I call him the Cookie Monster. Lol

I also prefer savory salty and fatty to sweets. I learned on WW that if I can forgo white Bread and pasta I can eat portioned servings of chips every day if I want instead lol. This way there is no deprivation! I load up on the zero point foods and use points for some whole grains, nuts, avocado, oil and chips or wine!

OMG give me 2 fat juicy cheeseburgers! But skip the fries. Maybe make the bread a bit lighter. I just love the protein.

I guess I skip the cupcakes for the wine. That’s my weakness.

ETA: I have been trying to put on weight, so I eat whenever I can. I just simply like protein and veggies.

I joined WW in October and switched to Freestyle in December. I have to tell you. WW is not a diet, it is a lifestyle. You cant eat 14 bananas a day and expect to lose weight. No food is free. The plan is geared to help people make healthy choices. I started in October at 152 lbs and 5'6" after having my second child in September, and am down to 127 lbs. IT WORKS. You make the plan work for you and that's it. Yes, fruit has calories. But when I tell you I am eating healthier than I ever have and I feel better than I ever have.. I am eating a few servings of fruit and vegetables a day, which I really never did. I barely kept fruit in my house except for my son. I used to fill up on empty carbs and skimp on my protein. It has changed my mindset and my eating habits for the better. If you want to make this type of change, do it. Otherwise don't. Theres a million diets and weight loss plans out there, everyone can do their own thing. Its that simple! But I can attest to the plan working, and I wasn't overweight to begin with.

Good for you.
DH and I are also doing Freestyle. It is teaching him how to make better food choices, and to not skip meals.
I am proud of what he has accomplished and that he is managing the program well.

I hate this freestyle plan. I was doing fine on the 30 points. I wasn't eating a lot of the new 0 point foods, particularly eggs and chicken, but I was staying within my points no problem. Now because they lowered my points I'm going over all the time. It's so frustrating and confusing.

I hate Freestyle too. I canceled my membership.

I felt forced to eat a lot of the zero point foods because I didn't have enough points to eat other things.

I don't want to eat chicken or fish and greek yogurt every day. It was getting so repetitive.

PointsPlus was my favorite WW program, which was the program before SmartPoints.

I went back to following PointsPlus on my own and I'm so much happier now. And most importantly losing weight again!

FB page Return to 30 lifestyle. Almost 12,000 members.
Everyone there is doing smart points. There’s also a page pinned to top of it for points plus.

I downloaded itrackbites for $2.99 and then a few more in app purchases. Maybe $11 total? It has points plus and smart points in it. They are adding freestyle soon. It’s a hacked WW app. Works great! Have to get used to the format but once you do, it’s the same thing and you’re not spending $ every month.

Freestyle blows lol

ETA: if you’re not on FB, there also a website with message boards with the same name.

Have you guys tried the 2 Ingredient dough trend? You can make pizzas, calzones, sweet turnovers for desserts... its one perk to the Greek yogurt thing. Also items like Josephs Pitas (1 point), Tumaros wraps (1-2 points each depending on flavor) to make quesadillas or flatbreads for lunch keep me interested. I pre-made breakfast sandwiches for the freezer using a 2 point English muffin, egg beaters, 1 slice of velveeta and 1 slice of Canadian bacon for 3 points total. I am enjoying the program. I was reluctant when it switched originally.

ALL OF THIS!

Joined in January to lose 10lbs and have lost more. It is a life style change, eating mindfully. I do not eat eggs and chicken and think of them as no calories, it works for me

Agreed. I did smartpoints when I needed to lose the baby weight the first time. I am now back after baby #2 and doing the freestyle. I have to say, I think I like the freestyle better...it seems easier to manage to me - but to each their own.

I am also certified and write diets for people who have great success all the time. It is nonsense. All calories count. Doesn't have to be as strict as me as I have already stated numerous times. But calories are calories.

And our goals are different but similar. I need to be as lean as possible while maintaining muscle. and 106 pounds is pretty thin in my opinion

Are you a RD CDN? What is the certification credentials?

Unless you want to hire me you do not need my credentials. I have several certifications.

I'm a weight watchers member. Its not free, its zero points. You still have to eat food that have a point value. I know people that have been very successful with this
