We just do our own for this very reason; too chaotic and not worth the hassle. I'll gladly stuff my own plastic eggs and let my kids run free in the yard.
When DD and the neighborhood kids were little we moms put together one for them. They had a great time and they all got plenty. We also did them when they were Daisy Scouts and they were strictly limited to a certain number of eggs. That's the only way to make it fair but I can see it being hard to enforce with a big group.

Someone (a parent) actually swooped in and grabbed one that my (at the time) 3 year old DS was CLEARLY reaching for.....I almost lost my sh!t. He left it tears, I was pissed....never again.
I would have been arrested. I would have gone apeshit on that asshole

I was at that egg hunt too and it was nuts. My 3 year old was trampled by a mom. She fell on top of him in the mud, got up , asked if he was ok and then took off for eggs. Meanwhile, my son was crying bc he fell and was all muddy. I didn't even have time to say anything to her bc it happened so fast. He ended up getting some eggs but I just couldn't believe the crazy parents. We went to the hunt in Babylon and it was great. You wait on line and let they let a few kids in at a time. They were allowed 3 eggs.

My daughter went to the older age hunt and it was even crazier. We were in the front of the line so she got some eggs too but they just have the kids charge in to get them.

I don't bother bringing my kids either. I went once with a friend it wasn't that crazy at the time but it wasn't worth ever going back again.
First I can't stand crowds and the craziness of these type of events and second I find it kind of stupid. Its boxed off area where they throw eggs in and the kids get them. There is no real hunt. I feel like they are better off just handing each kids 3 eggs

My kids are a little beyond the egg hunt thing but.... in past years, I would being along my own eggs in case there were not enough for my kids to grab. I would pack 5 eggs per kid just in case.

I've never done a public egg hunt, but we have done it on my block (we have a lot of neighbors with kids) where everyone hid eggs in their front/back yard, and the kids went from house to house (the participating houses) searching.
It was easy to set up (we just agreed on a number that each house would hide), and easy to manage with a small group of kids.
Not sure if that's a viable option for OP, but it's a way to have a fun egg hunt experience without the chaos and potential disappointment.

First and last egg hunt
We did one on Saturday at my neighborhood clubhouse and I loved the way it was run. They had 3 different age groups (0-3, 4-6, 7-10) and they were in different areas. They knew how many were hidden in each section and divided the number by the number of kids in the section. So, for DS, they could only get 17 eggs each, and could only get 1 sparkle egg (which had a quarter instead of candy). The kids were crazy at first, but at the end, they all shared to make sure everyone had enough.

We live in a court with in court with 16 kids, so we do our own every year. Each parent hides 12 eggs for each one of their kids and that is what they can find. Plus we do 8 golden and the children can only find 1 golden egg. It works out great. The kids range in age from 5-18 and they all love it.

DH wanted to go to one in a local park, I didn't want to go because I knew exactly what would happen. DD (2.5) was sad because she didn't get any eggs. I just told her that the Easter Bunny would hide some in our backyard on Easter.
