breast cancer cup cake Help!

I have to bake for work next week. I will make yellow cake with vanilla frosting.

Issues: I cant find the pink ribbons toppers either edible or the ones you stick on.

I'm not an on line shopping and I need them by Sunday. No stores seem to carry them even Micheal's

I found pink sprinkles the small ball type. How would that look?

Or can I use the icing gel to draw on the cup cake

Help, thoughts, suggestions please.

Can you get pink cupcake wrappers too?

I'm a spaz with gel and icing so I wouldn't attempt it but the pink sprinkle balls or those sugar sprinkles sound good!

Re: breast cancer cup cake Help!

You could make the little cupcake picks that you stick in...google the round images, print on card stock, cut them out and glue two together with a toothpick between them to stick into the cupcake.

You're fine with pink sprinkles and wrappers.

If you did have time and wanted to get crafty, you can buy a small thing of ready made pink fondant (Michael's has) and make the ribbons yourself. It's literally rolling out the fondant on wax paper, cutting strips and then shaping them into the ribbon shape. That would be MUCH easier than gel icing and you can do it ahead of time and just add them to the cupcakes after they are baked and iced.

Pink sprinkles are fine.

As a survivor, I can tell you that I despise the pink ribbon, as do most of the other people I know who are breast cancer patients/survivors. Some people love it, many people don’t like it. A hint of pink without the ribbon is the way to go.

You could also just add food coloring to the vanilla icing to make it pink.

Thank you everyone, I am going to use pink nonparells sprinkles. I try and pick up pink cup cake liners.

This is for a co-work who will be celebrating her 3 yrs cancer free anniversary and her birthday at the same time.

You can use pink candy melts and a squeeze bottle to make the ribbons on parchment paper on a sheet pan. Then, sprinkle the ribbons with some nonpareils, pop them into the freezer and then just put them on top of the vanilla cupcakes.
Or go to a candy making supply store to see if they have awareness ribbon molds (mine does)

Not related, (and I hope this is a sensitive question), but just wondering why the ribbon is despised?

The ribbon has been controversial since it started: read about its history here

It is slapped on products that contain ingredients that are linked to cancer, and slapped on products that don’t even say whether or not the company is actually going to give any money to breast cancer organizations: here are some examples

When money is raised, it often goes toward Komen, which only gives 25% of funds to research and training programs (the descriptions of which are ambiguous), and Komen has such a monopoly on the marketing of breast cancer that other organizations that give vastly larger percentages to research are living in Komen’s shadow (ie, the smaller organizations don’t raise nearly as much as they could since they are not as widely known)

Breast cancer kills. The “pink-ness” of it, the way it is marketed, would make one think it doesn’t, and even that the treatment isn’t that bad.

The treatment, in fact, is so bad that I considered not continuing it because I thought it would kill me.

Breast cancer can return, years later, even if you were diagnosed at stage zero, fifteen years ago. And when it returns, it is terminal. Always. That is metastatic breast cancer, aka stage four. And roughly 2-5% of money raised for breast cancer research goes toward metastatic breast cancer. Yes, you read that right: the type of breast cancer that kills only receives 2-5% of funds to find out why it kills. And Komen does not/will not help those with stage 4: that’s right, the type of breast cancer that kills is ignored by the largest breast cancer pink ribbony organization out there, leaving patients to feel even more isolated when they get diagnosed as metastatic.

My friend just died two weeks ago of metastatic breast cancer. She was 31.

31.

And if there was more funding toward stage 4, she may have lived longer. Maybe even not died from the disease.

A wonderful organization to donate to is METAvivor which works toward funneling more money toward research of stage 4 breast cancer.

Omg

I had no idea about any of that- wow

I'm glad you told us and I'm glad you mentioned METAvivor - are there other organizations that give good contributions?

I'm so sorry about your friend.

And you're right about funding the research. Part of my old job included budgeting for BC research and I think I saw Komen as a funding source once in 7 years. I frequently saw BCRF, but usually for earlier stage (though not always). Pharma and the NCI are basically funding it all for metastatic cancers.
