summer camp
Plans for my 9 year old twins (boy and girl) fell through, now we are scrambling to find an AFFORDABLE summer camp/day camp for them. Everything is soooo expensive. Cheapest i saw for both of them was almost seven thousand dollars for 8 weeks. Anyone know of a place that is affordable? I am located in Levittown. TIA

Re: summer camp
Pump it up in plainview is very affordable. Only thing is they just stay there the whole day. Its I think $175 for the whole week 8:30-4:30 you can pay for before and aftercare I think $8 every half hour
I send my kid there for 2 weeks out of the summer.
I also send my kids to a Taekwon do camp PM if you are interested. Also affordable when it comes to camps.
I think right now the price is about $200-$250 (not sure right now I got an early sign up discount) a week they do things there and got on a field trip once a week which is additional $20 a week. They either bring an activite in or they go somwehre. Swimming once a week and they take them to to a park. Is it the best no not at all but I refuse to pay a ton for summer camp. I don't get the appeal maybe because I never went. I just went to a babysitters all summer. So I look at it that this is a little better than a babysitter
also nassau county has a full day camp for I think 6 or 7 weeks in the summer last year I think it was 950 and it was from 8:30-5:30 I think. They have 4 locations only negative is that they do close if it rains because its outside all day. I have not sent my kids but I do know someone who has.
ETA: these are the cheapest I have seen and I have called tons and tons of places

Re: summer camp
Are there any YMCAs in LI? They usually have lower rates.
Always ask about sliding scales at camps. Some don't advertise but may still offer

I agree about checking this out - this is usually the most affordable option. We're moving (off LI) and I don't even want to say how inexpensive his summer camp is going to be...

Re: summer camp
Did you look into area school districts? My district offers full and half day camps through August 10th. For residents, it's only $640 for half day and $1100 for full day. They also offer before and after care (extra charge) for those that need it.
Look into your area, you will usually pay more if you're not a resident but the district camps are still far less expensive than traditional day camps.
ETA - My kids are doing the half day camp (9-12:30 every day) and the $640 covers the WHOLE summer, that price isn't weekly or anything.

My 2 boys are going to Camps R Us in Bellmore for the second year in a row. For the two of them (ages 4 and 7), 8 weeks, 4 days a week from 7:30-9 (before care), then 9am-5pm is about $5,000. The best part is they LOVE it! The staff is incredible, they are always busy on trips or doing something "on campus". This is the third camp we've tried and we aren't leaving.

the Y in my area, and I live in PA is more than what I pay for Bright Horizions in Princeton NJ..it was $350 for full time, 1 child for the week. and im not even sure that included lunch. But its all day.
check your daycares in the area too. they often run programs for school aged kids in the summer.
My son goes with me to work b/c there is a daycare onsite here, but its $313 a week, for 10 weeks of summer. Summer camp is more than his catholic school tuition.

Re: summer camp
I'm in N. Bellmore, and a lot of parents in my area do the Wantagh Park camp. It's supposedly much more affordable than other camps in the area, and it's very popular!
The only thing is, if it's a really rainy day (washout or violent thunderstorms), I think they cancel the camp, so obviously working parents need a back up.
ETA my son is 9 and a lot of his friends are going there, so I think it's good for that age group.

Re: summer camp
My son went to Wantagh Park for one summer when he was 5 and besides the rain, consider the heat. They have no indoor facility and it can get HOT. They do a LOT of sports/running around and there is no relief of the heat. They have a tent set up but under the tent it's even hotter and there are flies all over from the lunch garbage. I was not happy with this camp.
My son actually got heat exhaustion and was home for a few days. The councilors are suppose to remind the kids to drink water but he obviously didn't drink enough. I think it might fine for the older kids but I wouldn't recommend it for the younger kids.

My biggest complaint about most camps isn't even the price -- it's the hours. They're not geared at all to working parents who use them as child care. The town "camps" are really just a few hours during the day to keep the kids busy while their parent or another adult is home. How else can you get the kid there at 9 AM and pick him up at 3 PM? I would need 8 AM to 5 PM -- and that's only because I work early and my husband works late. Otherwise, I would need 6 AM to 6 PM!

Exactly. Tutor Time camp was great because it had regular daycare hours- 630 am to 630 pm But it was limited in the activities and not for older kids really And expensive!

Yes Camps R Us gets great reviews on the Levittown moms board. There is a location in Hicksville that is right over the border from North Levittown.

My kids go to Camps R Us in Bellmore too. This will be their 3rd year. Of all the camps, definitely the more affordable. You can pick your days/weeks and tailor it to what you need. They go on fun trips and bowling/Wantagh pool 2x per week. My 2 are doing 3 days per week for 6 weeks and it is about $4000. They also offer discounts for certain employers.

Another vote for Camps R Us. Both my kids have gone there for several years. We are in Levittown and we go to the Hicksville campus. Very reasonable pricing and they love it!

Re: summer camp
There's an affordable camp at Farmingdale college - Future Stars I think it's called. But I don't think they do late care. YMCA is usually pretty reasonable.
The price of camp is outrageous. So many people I know are going to these camps that are like $7500 per child for the summer. Yes it's a great camp but if you have 2 kids, you have to have $15,000 lying around? It's insane. And working parents literally have no choice, they need to put the kids somewhere. I feel for you.
