Has anyone here ever upgraded the diamond in their engagement ring?
I'm thinking of upgrading my center stone. I would trade my current diamond in for the upgrade. Anyone have any experience doing this? Just curious if it's worth it and if you felt like you got what your center stone is worth.

Re: Has anyone here ever upgraded the diamond in their engagement ring?
No I haven't but bear in mind that diamonds do not hold any value. You won't get even close to what you paid for the center stone. Diamonds are truly a dime a dozen and are not rare at all and a terrible investment. The old saying is- Diamonds only have value to brides.
So if you are ok with it, and just want a bigger/better stone that is fine. But if you are expecting to get close to what was paid for the stone, don't do it

I never understood the "no value" argument. Obviously you don't get back what you paid, but it's not like they are really a dime a dozen. If they were truly a dime a dozen, everybody would be undercutting everybody and you would be seeing prices 20% of what they currently are.
I don't think every jeweler is in collusion with each other to keep driving prices higher. Even the online dealers are still up there price wise and they will be the first people to undercut somebody.

I had no idea that this was the case. I assumed if it was GIA certified, etc that the appraised value is basically what you would get for it.

From the ladies who have sold their engagement rings after a divorce- this is not the case

I have heard the same.
I forget I even have an engagement ring and I’m wearing it right now so upgrading it is never making it onto my list of priorities

Ahhh ok. I sold my first engagement ring and I did not get nearly what we paid for it, but it also was not GIA certified nor did it have the original appraisal, so I just assumed I got less because of that.

sadly, diamonds aren't worth what we are made to believe.
i, for one, still dream of having a rock on my finger... so big that my left arm gets buff just from carrying it around. i also still dream of winning the lotto (although i don't play).

I think you may have better luck if you are selling your stone and upgrading to a better/larger stone at the same jeweler rather than just selling.

You'll see if the day ever comes where you have to sell your engagement ring.

No, mine was GIA certified and appraised and I didn't get anywhere near that. I only got as much a s I did because it was an old family friends jewelers who bought it from me to help me out.

You definitely don’t get what it appraised for. I have a GIA certified and the appraisal. I have never thought of selling but I liked having the appraisal for insurance. My aunt works at a high end jewelry store in the city and they may only give 20-30% of the appraised value. I would honestly keep your diamond. Your husband bought it for you to wear forever, I would maybe look to buy an anniversary band or something if you want to change things up

I did. You get no where near what you think your original diamond was worth when trading in. It was a fraction of the original cost. For me, it was not worth trading it in so I made the original stone into a necklace and just purchased a whole new ring.

My friend has a few different CZ sets she wears because she wasn't going to get anywhere close to her appraisal so she didn't want to sell it. She rotates depending on her mood, and they're excellent quality.

If it’s something you want to do, and it’s in your budget, then go for it. I love my E ring. But I wouldn’t hesitate to make a change if it was something I really wanted.
I know people who have done it and are happy with what they paid in the end.
Ps : Appraisals are always way high. Mine appraised for double the purchase price. Depending on the stone color clarity and size - prices vary.

I know someone who didn't want a diamond for ethical reasons and got a moissanite (sp?) and OMG it is stunning. It made my diamond look eh in comparison (and I have a decent stone).
If I were in the market for a beautiful stone I'd look at that.

This is true, and I had a GIA certified diamond. Thanks, DeBeers

I’d probably just get a different ring for my right hand instead. Maybe for a big anniversary? Aside from it losing resale value, I think for sentimental reasons I wouldn’t want to change the ring my DH gave me. That’s the ring he saved up to buy and proposed with.

Re: Has anyone here ever upgraded the diamond in their engagement ring?
No, but I added another wedding band so my e-ring now sits between the two bands. The bands have to curve around the e-ring, and I had the bands made with diamonds that belonged to my mother and DH's aunt, both of who passed away.
My sister added two side diamonds to her e-ring.

I agree with this. I feel an engagement ring has more value than just how big a rock it is and how many compliments you can get on it.

you might want to reset your ring. look into a double halo setting if you are looking to make your ring look bigger.

You can always have it made into a pendant and get a new ring? Or go to a jewelry store and see what they can do!
