Sick Kids
Lately I have been making myself a nervous wreck about my kids getting sick. I have a 2.5 year old and an almost 4 month old. I know kids get sick and I don't think I would stress as much about my 2.5 year old getting sick if I just had him ...but I'm nervous whatever he gets my 4 month old will get. I had a stomach bug over the weekend and refused to go near the kids. I just got a call that my 2.5 year old threw up and I am making myself sick over it. I have never been a worrier until recently and I feel completely nuts. Am I the only one who gets like this?

Nope I am the same way. I also have a 2.5 Year old and a 4 month old! I was so crazy over the winter with the flu. Thank god we made it through the winter with no one getting sick. I was soooo nervous! I didn't even send my Son to school during the winter because I was so scared to get the little one sick!

Re: Sick Kids
Im not like this but I know people like this and honestly you are going to have to get over it. Kids will get sick you cannot keep them in a bubble. Its part of growing up. Once they go to school they are exposed to all outside germs there is no way you can keep them well all the time. Remember most things contact isn't going to be deadly they will be sick for a little while and than they will be better.

Re: Sick Kids
While we never want our kids to be sick, you have to look at this way.... they are going to get sick. You can't control it. And to be honest, its a good thing because it helps to build their immunity for later on when they are school aged. And they will get better. It's rare for kids to get major complications from things like stomach bugs and colds, etc. It sucks when they are sick, and yes it's nerve wracking, but it really is a normal part of life and childhood and they will recover. Do what you can to keep them healthy, wash hands, keep away from them as much as possible when sick, but at the end of the day, don't stress about it.

That's so funny we have kids the exact same age! I am a nut job over the winter but for some reason I can't shake it now that flu season is over!

Sick Kids
Kids will get sick no matter what you do. And they were long exposed to whatever you had way before you actually got sick.
Getting sick is a good thing imo. Over time they will get sick less and have a better immune system.

Sick Kids
After my kids were both hospitalized from RSV and now my one has been hospitalized monthly since for reactive airway disease/ asthma from the RSV, has me a basket case. I’ve had to see my child on oxygen and on round the clock nebulizers and pumped full of so much steroids that his heart rate has hit 220 multiple times, I have PTSD almost when they get sick. A slight cold sends him into distress and we are in the hospital. We were just there for 3 days and this is the 4th longer stay and I’m just done. I can’t... you aren’t alone!!

Sick Kids
I developed emetophobia about four years ago. It started with a fear of potentially missing an important event at work and it was like a switch flipped in my head. It's more of the anticipation of someone actually getting sick than the act of getting sick. It has been fairly debilitating and has led to some OCD tendencies. I only have one DS, he's seven. I'm still working through it.

I struggled with this for years to the point I couldn’t go anywhere without the fear of getting sick. I would spend $$$ on things to keep healthy, I would be terrified to go out to a bar- what if someone was sick?! I couldn’t go out to a restaurant without wondering did the wash the utensils good enough?! I would be up all night if someone I knew was sick and I recently saw them, I was a basket case. Overtime I did get better once I dealt with the anxiety piece of things and now it doesn’t even phase me anymore to be honest! I fear more of my children getting sick but myself no. FM me if you ever need support!

My sister had something similar (but less intense) with her DS. All started with RSV. I had a bad experience with croup DS caught from his cousin (he had just a cold). I think a healthy fear when you have a little one at risk is normal. When kids are older, there is no helping exposure... and I don’t worry about myself getting sick.

Re: Sick Kids
First, to put your mind at ease, infants are very resilient. And my DC2 gets sick so much less often than DC1, in part because I believe DC2 was exposed to so much more in the way of germs. With a 2 year old it's IMPOSSIBLE to keep things clean and sterile.
Second, if by chance you are nursing, the baby is protected by you and will avoid so many of the illnesses your 2.5 year old might pick up.
Third, is it possible this new fear is in some way related to PP issues? I remember my anxiety being through the roof after my second child (not about getting sick, just other things) and it was right round the 3-4 month mark. So if it feels more intense than just the basic worry about getting sick that everyone has to some extent, maybe mention it to the dr.

It is deff more intense than I think it should be. I found myself feeling breathless before thinking about it. I have never worried about myself getting sick but now if I do get sick I worry about giving it to my kids. I don’t worry about it all day and night just when I think one of them could be sick or one isn’t acting right I automatically think they’re getting sick.

Re: Sick Kids
It’s normal to be nervous. But kids get sick.
Both of my DSs had stomach viruses as infants - one was only 2 weeks old when his brother brought it home from daycare. The older one caught it on his first day of daycare.

Thanks so much. It's great to hear that you were able to move past it. It's crippling. I try to reason with myself, but I have anxiety about eating with my hands or cooking chicken for fear that I will undercook it. It's that bad. Hopefully someday I will move beyond but for now I just try to deal with it.
