Not Antigua but I went to Sandals St. Lucia before I got married. You couldn’t pay me any amount of money to go back to a Sandals.

I went 8 years ago and thought it was great. Food (sit down restaurants) was excellent, loved sailing, the beach and the pools. Couldn’t use the spa (was pregnant), but hubby said it was good. Had no alcohol that trip, so can’t comment on that.

Went 4 1/2 years ago for my honeymoon and absolutely loved it. We stayed on the Mediterranean side and our room was beautiful. The grounds were immaculate, food was excellent, service was beyond wonderful. I would go back in a heartbeat.

I should have clarified why I hated it. Arrived to find that our beachfront room was so shabby and smelled horribly of mildew and old lady perfume. It took me crying in the lobby from heat and exhaustion and telling my DH that I wanted to go home to finally get a room in the Med Village - a sales manager had seen me visibly upset and helped out. Sand flies, so dining in the beachside restaurant was out. Jellyfish with no warning signs - I got stung badly. Systematic blackouts, always at night - power was being drained by a Canadian radio station broadcasting live. Pool bar service was so bad that we helped ourselves. Restaurant service sucked. Travel agent tours took place, so certain restaurants and bars were closed. Sandals promo wedding week, again certain restaurants and bars were closed.
This ALL happened the week of our honeymoon. That's why I swore I would never ever go back to Sandals.

What a nightmare!! What time of year did you go?
I was there 10 years ago & actually really liked it. I went in mid May. The most important thing to me is the beach & it was the nicest one I've ever been to. The sand was pristine & the water was amazing. However, I stayed on the older side & I think we paid half of what people were paying to stay on the new side. Had I paid as much of them I wouldn't have been as impressed. I actually liked the older side better...felt more "Caribbean" to me. The food was good but nothing amazing...was able to try all the restaurants. Never experienced a blackout...no sand flies or jellyfish (that would've turned me off so much!) Not sure I would go back to a Sandals...the prices are ridiculous & never really worth what they charge.

Re: Sandals Antigua
I've been to several Sandals- never Antigua though. I loved it 20 years ago when I was in my 20's I don't think I'd love now that it's 20 years later and I'm in my 40s
I also think it's way over priced and you can do better for the money elsewhere

Yeah, our room was a dump. The whole place was a dump. The food was awful, the service sucked. It was LOUD. So, so loud. I don't understand how anyone finds it relaxing. Tacky was an understatement.
OP, if you don't have your heart set on Antigua, try one of the Excellence resorts. Truly amazing. Service is top notch, gorgeous and well-kept. Food isn't five star, but decent. Worth every penny and I'm pretty sure it was much cheaper than sandals.

Re: Sandals Antigua
I was there 17 years ago and had major problems. Like someone else said, having to help ourselves with drinks and filthy bug infested rooms. I would have to upgrade to mediteranean side due to what I experienced on the caribbean side many years ago. Med side and big main pool was not there. If it wasn't for that big pool addition, I would not consider going back to the resort as it was. Friends are going. Would love to join them, but really struggling to go back

In that case, I would most definitely not go back. I highly doubt the addition of more space has improved the service or the quality of food/drink. If anything, it's probably only gotten worse AND more expensive.

Wow. That’s bad. We went January 8 years ago. Stayed ocean view Mediterranean building. Loved the room and decor. All clean, no bugs in room. Big pool was great. I thought food was better than a cruise. No jellies or sand fleas (did have jelly invasion this November in Florida Gulf coast (my DD had a terrible reaction and couldn’t walk) and terrible sand flies or fleas in Aruba which grossed me out). Every tropical place has its negative times.
That being said, we now have kids and always take them. I think you can get more for your $ at different places.

Re: Sandals Antigua
We went the end of October 2007. We had gotten to know the general manager of the resort, he was German like me. He admitted that there was an issue with the staff and needed to work on an improvement plan. We had told him of the activities director, who would twice a day take a pool float and turn it into a floating bar with pitchers of his "drink special" because he knew how awful the bar service was.
We had been to Secrets Excellence Punta Cana in 2004 and loved it. This was when it was still one resort, after that they split into Secrets and the more upscale Excellence. We had already been to Aruba, had been to other Caribbean Islands. Did Club Med in my single years. Just wanted to try something new and was sorely disappointed.

I wonder if thats same manager I dealt with. We met a bunch of couples and all met him and got a comp 4 night stay. We used it in Bahamas and it was so much nicer at the time. I probably wont go back. I wasnt very impressed with the island either. Just really wanted to join friends. There are great recent reviews although if I search for negative ones, I could see the problems.

I disagree with this statement. If you look at this thread, almost all of the people commenting visited this resort anywhere from 10-20 years ago. Do you know how many times staff and general management have likely changed hands during that time? Additionally, Sandals Antigua did a bunch of major renovations to their property (including to the older Caribbean side) last year. With that said, when we went, less than 5 years ago, the food and service was outstanding. In general, I think Sandals as a whole company has continued to try to improve their standards over the years, so I can't imagine how you could think that in 17 years since the last time she has been there she would see no changes in the quality of food/drink or service. A simple look on tripadvisor of reviews would show otherwise.

Maybe they have improved, I have no idea. I certainly wouldn’t pay $10k+ to find out. The trip advisor reviews when I went were good and when we got there it was awful.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Obviously lots of people do or they wouldn’t be expanding left and right. I’m just saying what I would do if I were in her shoes, which is what she asked. As someone else who had a terrible experience, I would never go back.

Thanks so much. The only reason I am considering it is they built a whole big section since I was there. It was quite small at the time. Since it's summer, it would be around $3,000 plus airfare. I can't imagine spending $10,000 to go there.. I just have an uneasy feeling though. While we had such a fun time with the couples we met while vacationing there, it was the worst resort experience I ever endured. I just don't know if I can get past that. The reviews are good, although the negative ones I believe. I also read there is a daily fogging there and they don't care who is in the way. Even in the restaurants before people eat. That disturbs me a bit. The pictures of it disturbs me even more.

I had to look it up. Someone goes around daily with a machine spraying and its one big fog. Some people said they saw them do a restaurant with tge tables set.

What's the purpose of the fogging? Is it for bugs? I didn't see this at all in the 8 days we were there, but if they did this near food I would be totally grossed out. We went in December, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

In that case, I would most definitely not go back. I highly doubt the addition of more space has improved the service or the quality of food/drink. If anything, it's probably only gotten worse AND more expensive.
Fogging? What is that?
I had to look it up. Someone goes around daily with a machine spraying and its one big fog. Some people said they saw them do a restaurant with tge tables set.
What's the purpose of the fogging? Is it for bugs? I didn't see this at all in the 8 days we were there, but if they did this near food I would be totally grossed out. We went in December, so I don't know if that makes a difference.
Its for bugs. They have it announced on the daily schedule. Ive seen pics and people complaining of it on TA. Some people said they were not far from it and the guy doing it didnt give them a chance to get away and they got stuck in it whike he has a mask. Some of the reviews about it are bothersome

I was there 17 years ago and had major problems. Like someone else said, having to help ourselves with drinks and filthy bug infested rooms. Sandals Antigua
We went 9 years ago for our honeymoon and enjoyed it. It wouldn't be my pick now for a romantic getaway but if I were going with friends, sure I'd go for it. We had a beautiful, upgraded room with a big oceanview balcony. I remember they fogged in late afternoon when everything was dead anyway. We were always back in our room getting ready for dinner or hanging on the balcony by then.
The complaint I had was they were doing aerial photos of the resort a few days so they'd shut down the pool to stage it and wouldn't let us take out a boat one day bc they were lined up for photos. Plus the helicopter flying by our room over and over but again most of this was late afternoon.
