Re: Chopsticks

I can. I was shakey for awhile when I first started eating sushi though. It doesn't help that some of the rolls are big and hard to pick up. And then the sashimi pieces are slippery and all over the place.

But I'm pretty good now.

DD loved that when we went to PF Changs once the manager brought her over a pair of kids' training chop sticks- they were plastic and connected at the top almost like tongs.
But she can use real ones now too

Not very well. I'd like to think I'm somewhat worldly, but I suck at using chopsticks.

One of my closest friends is Chinese. I have gone to a restaurant in Chinatown with him once or twice and he was not offended at all by my clumsiness with chopsticks. He laughed at me and got me a fork.

If someone told me my crappy fine motor skills were "ruining their experience" that is the last time I would be dining with them.

I am with you. I cannot do it. I have it many times, and when the only utensil presented were chopsticks I did my best, but my husband didn't want to wait 3 hours for me me to eat, so he requested forks.

I do know that it is rude to stab your food though. I'm not uncultured I just have poor fine motor skills ( my handwriting is terrible, I can't hand sew, can't draw.) It is not just from a lack of trying.

I actually find it weird when people request chopsticks when presented with a fork.

How do chopsticks make it better?

But isn't using a fork stabbing your food?

Nope cannot use them. I try but I lack dexterity. I will use a fork if need be.

Re: Chopsticks

i used to always ask for a fork because i didn't want to embarrass myself. i eventually got over myself and decided to try.

it didn't take long to learn. i can be a little shaky sometimes, depending on the food.

my favorite is a noddle soup. chopsticks in my right had for solids and noodles and spoon in my left hand for broth.

now, i'm hungry!

Re: Chopsticks

Yes. It’s the only way I can eat sushi, and after vacationing in Asia 12 years ago, I perfected my chopstick skills. Once you get the hang of it, it’s fairly intuitive. It’s a lot easier with the takeout chopsticks though, because the cheap wood gives resistance that the food “sticks” to - in the nicer restaurants, the really nice chopsticks are rounded and all shiny and lacquered and the food just slides off!

I know how to but I don't because it is cultural appropriation.
