Was I being rude?
The other day I was on the subway and listening to music through headphones. I always check the volume by holding the headphones against my clothes to make sure I can’t hear it. I do have special headphones that noise cancel. It was not loud.
An old lady walks on and sits down next to me. She then kind of yells at me for my music being too loud. I waved my hands at her in a go-away fashion and said whatever. She left me alone after that. It was already noisy bc it was rush hour.
I’ve never had this complaint before.

If you already checked to make sure it wasn't too loud, then I wouldn't worry about it. She probably only heard a tiny bit and wanted to complain.

I hate when people have loud music through headphones. YOu checked, I presume it wasn't loud and just barely audible to someone sitting exactly next to you. Some people like to complain.
I'm assuming she was loud to you since she assumed you couldn't hear. Waving to go away seems a bit rude rather than addressing the issue

I don’t know the deal in Germany, but in NY you don’t ride the subway expecting pleasantries. I wouldn’t think twice about waving someone away.

Well, Germans tend to stare, but will never say anything on the subway. It’s usually quiet with not a lot of people talking. I’ve noticed that it can be quite rude when you get on and off the train (i.e. pushing and no excuse me).
She just yelled at me. I was like, really? No one else reacted to this, as they tend to do here. I mean, I passed out on a subway here in the heat, and they basically got me off the train, and they left me on the platform with my bag. I hope that description helps.

Old people in general are rude, even normally "polite" old Germans.

Re: Was I being rude?
No, idk how it is in Germany but that lady was being rude by bothering you.
I will caution you in general about noise cancellation and having your music loud. It’s always good to be alert and able to hear any announcement or other things that may be going on. My kickboxing instructor used to always say this and I never thought much of it until I didn’t hear the Hoboken train crash literally right behind me.
It took me awhile to even listen to music on my commute but now I keep it low so I can be aware of my surroundings. You never know in this crazy world.

Sounds just like NY. I fainted on the train and people stepped OVER me to get off. One person helped me and that was it.
And I agree, she was rude. Sounds like she had her hearing aid turned up to high! Though I would've ignored her completely.

No. she was rude. Don't yell at me on a train. I'm an adult. Mind your own business. I'd have waved her off too

They stepped over you?! Man I thought being left on the platform with my bag and having to find a bench was bad!

Re: Was I being rude?
I almost passed out on a train - the A/C was blasting but I was dripping buckets in a cold sweat then everything went fuzzy - had to squat down. No one asked if I was okay or if I needed a seat. I was young too - only about 19 at the time. Gotta love people!

I had such a day that day. I was just like fück it. I’m starting to get that attitude where I’m just tired of dealing with people’s $hit. IDGAF anymore.

Re: Was I being rude?
You were not rude at all. That happened to me too once. I would have told her to back off. I've been commuting to the city for 20 yrs. I don't know how you look like, but I'm very petite and come off looking shy and unassuming. I'm sick and tired of riders complaining. I guarantee if I was 6ft tall large man, the complainers would not have the nerve to say anything to me. I just shout back at them now.

That's terrible. I can't.. this is why I want to get out of the Tri-state area.
One time I got on a subway and it just wasn't leaving the station. The people were starting to get heated as to what the hold up was. Then they announced that there was a medical emergency in one of the cars and that was why we were being held.
People starting yelling and screaming and saying things like- then drag them off the train already and let's GO!
Meanwhile there was another subway arriving on the track across from us that we were able to just jump on to and be on our way. But people have like ZERO empathy I tell you!

I take the LIRR and that reminds me of the day the train was stuck at the Mineola station because someone needed medical attention.
A group of men were complaining endlessly about it - how they didn't understand the holdup because we were right by Winthrop.
Um yeah, if someone needs medical attention, that doesn't mean you can just throw them over your shoulder and walk across the street.
I had to really bite my lip to keep from saying something.
OP, if you're sure it wasn't loud and she was just complaining, then I don't think you were rude.

I feel like the lone wolf here but yes I think dismissing someone by waiving them off is rude. Even if she was wrong. Its actually a pet peeve of mine though.
