Do you ever find a Grandparent to be rude?
I love my Grandma dearly and we are extremely close...but the other night I called her to try and convince her to come to Easter dinner and she was just very short with me like she just wanted to get off the phone..I got off the phone and cried for about an hour

I'm sorry she made you feel bad. I haven't had any Grandparents since I was 25.

Re: Do you ever find a Grandparent to be rude?
I know what you mean.
My grandfather isn't pleasent at all. He can be mean, say things he doesn't even realize & be hurtful.
My grandma (other side of the family) made me a little upset too for Easter. My family is celebrating at my Dads cousins house (lots of people.......and about 20 minutes from home for us & grandma). My cousin extended the invite for my Mom to invite Grandma & her brother who lives home.
Grandma said no Too far, yada, yada, yada........
So now because I feel bead to leave her & my uncle just the 2 of them, DH & I are skipping the big family celebration & going to Grandmas instead........it's OK.....but would be nicer if she came along instead

It may be a generational thing or an age thing. I have seen personalities change as they age. Sweet people can and do become crotchety. Not all but some.

ITA. It's as if all of the checkpoints to social graces are no longer there. They say what's on their mind, no longer mince words. Which is a shame because I found out what a serious racist my grandmother is.

Re: Do you ever find a Grandparent to be rude?
My paternal grandmother and I were never close. Her dislike for my mother was transparent by her treatment of me. Heck, she couldn't drag her azz from Brooklyn to Nassau to see me in the hospital until I was 5 days old. When my cousins were born, she was there the day of.
Anyway, enough said. May she rest in peace - she never gave me any.

Re: Do you ever find a Grandparent to be rude?
DH and I were talking about this over lunch. We came to the conclusion based on people in our own lives that if a person reflect and perceived the lives they lived as fulfilling and happy, then perhaps they are less likely to be that "crotchety old person" I spoke of before. Even if a person has all that SHOULD have made them happy, it doesn't mean they are or will be forever. I know plenty of older people who have had the means and support throughout their lives to be the best they can be and don't. They are bitter and angry now. Just a thought.

Re: Do you ever find a Grandparent to be rude?
My last Grandparent passed when I was 17, but in the years since I have noticed some older people feel they have been polite long enough and feel they can say whatever they want. Hope you feel better

Re: Do you ever find a Grandparent to be rude?
My one grandmother isn't mean just kinda rude sometimes but that is personality and I don't take it to heart at all. One thing is for sure though, I know I do not want to be like her at 81

ITA
I called my grandmother today for Easter and when I got off the phone with her I cried. I was speaking to a lady was once very active and social but now is slowly deteriorating and it is just so hard.
With my grandmother it's age and the sickness. She has dementia

Yes, my only grandparent that's still alive is 92. Sometimes she says things that blow my mind. She'll has said to my mother (her Daughter in law) "she's not fat like you."
ouch!

Re: Do you ever find a Grandparent to be rude?
My Grandmother is Evil... So I feel your pain.
She has always been this way.
My sis has a dog and I have a dog and she'll be like "I like the dark one better"... First, who says that? Second, the dog's have NAMES.
She is just MEAN. She rolls her eyes, complains and is RUDE and it's not with age- she has always been this way.
She will say she favors some grandkids over others. Her behavior probably makes my other Grammy (the good Grandma) roll in her grave
My other Grammy was an Angel.
I'm so sorry yours is like that

Yes, my grandma can be a little rude. She is stuck in her ways and just old, so I write it off.
