Renovation taking FOREVER!!!!
ugh! we live in NJ, so i feel safe to vent a little bit here. but... we're adding on a master "suite" (bedroom, bathroom and closet), and we had to add on to our downstairs, too (just the way the house is set up, hard to explain....) ANYWAY--- we started in DECEMBER.... so we're coming up on 8 months. the contractor had told us 4-6 months. theres still SO much to be done! the drywall just got done last week, so right now he's getting started on painting. but we still have all the floors, bathroom tile and stuff, drop ceiling in the downstairs, the siding outside, the light fixtures, the baseboards.... all kinds of stuff. I'm just TIRED. our contractor is great... but i'm just done with him only spending half days here, or skipping days here while he's working at his other job sites. we have 2 ACTIVE boys ( 7 and 4)- and i'm home with them for the summer, so its been exhausting trying to keep them out of his way when they only have half day camps. we're doing some stuff in their rooms, too so right now all of their bedroom stuff is in my living room. DH and i are sleeping on a mattress on the living room floor, everything rom all of our closets is all over the living room. I'm tired of walking around stuff, tired of not being able to clean throughly, tired of telling my oldest son he can't have a friend over because of everything going on.... i know its gonna be great when its done, but i'm kind of over the whole " It'll all be worth it" thing..... THANKS FOR LISTENING!!!! just figured somebody else on here might be able to relate

Re: Renovation taking FOREVER!!!!
That's rough. You do have to consider that time estimates usually need to be doubled, but 8 months is a long time with so much to go. Have you tried talking to your contractor?
For sure I would withhold the next payment until you see a drastic amount of work completed.

Re: Renovation taking FOREVER!!!!
It shouldn't take 8 months to do additions - our entire upstairs and bump out was done in 5 months. Tell him to stop dragging his feet and finish up your job and as pp said I would withhold payments until he gets his act together.

Renovation taking FOREVER!!!!
I completely agree that he's taking way too long. We basically ripped off our roof and added a second floor and we were done inside of 6 months. He should be done by now, or just have tiny things to finish up, not whole jobs like tiling your bathroom and doing the exterior siding. I would definitely have a conversation and tell him you need to have the job finished by end of August because you are hosting a party at your house and need him to be done. That gives him a month. And I'd also withhold any more payments until he's complete.

Re: Renovation taking FOREVER!!!!
Have you spoken to the contractor? Honestly I’d be pissed that they are only there 1/2 days etc. unacceptable. I know it’s different, but we finished our basement which was a big job (soup to nuts, needed demo work and pretty much everything). Our contractor told us it would be 3 months and some days when they were in the middle of something they might have to stay late (for example, when plumbing time came, plumber wasn’t going to leave at 6 with pipes half open). We said yes of course and that was tough and just our basement. They were clean but there was just dust everywhere etc. I couldn’t wait for it to be done so I can only imagine what you are living through.
Our contractor was here every day all day the first 2 weeks and after that, his crew of 2 guys came all day every day (7:30-5) but he always stopped by at the end of the day to check on everything. He knew how badly I wanted them to be done and he assured me he wanted to be done too but it had to be right and in the end it would be worth it. He was right on with his estimate (I think he went 1 day over the 3 months-lol) but said he had been doing this long enough to know how long things take and wasn’t going to give a false timeline (but of course this ensured his team being here all day every day). If they were only here 1/2 days or skipping days, I would’ve went crazy.

he has a couple other jobs going on at the same time. which is fine. the problem is he only has a couple people that work for/ with him.... so not enough to have somebody working at each job every day. so like they'll split days or alternate days. its just frustrating! and i mean he really is a good guy, and doing a great job with everything- like he didn't just put primer on the walls, he mixed 3 different kinds of primer together so the paint will come out better... he's extremely cautious about how he leaves things at night, knowing we have the 2 boys here. so it definitely could be worse... just frustrating! especially since we kind of pushed him to start the foundation in December, hoping we could stay a little bit ahead of his spring and summer jobs, and be moved in by the time our boys were home ALL THE TIME for the summer. this week, the wood floors are getting delivered, but they have to acclimate for about 10 days before they can actually put them in. so he's supposed to start tiling the bathroom part, so that when the wood floors are ready to go in, it all lines up nice. SOOOO hopefully this week, we'll feel like we're getting somewhere!

Renovation taking FOREVER!!!!
Sorry, but it's not okay for him to be working only half days or skipping days. I don't care how nice of a guy he is, you are PAYING him. That means he should be committed to your job. I would be flipping my sh@t and giving him a drop dead deadline or no more money.
And there is no reason on God's green earth to mix THREE primers together!!!! That is laughable! This guy is taking you for a ride!

LOL. Yes, primer is primer. 3 types won't make a difference. That's funny And if he doesn't want to pay enough people so that someone can be there every day, then maybe he shouldn't take on so many jobs. You need to staff appropriately for your business.

ITA. Also, why is he painting if the rest of the project is not completed? He'll wind up damaging walls when materials are being brought it and have to repaint! Painting is last or pretty close to it!

Yes, this is true. This is why my contractor told us when he could start the job (it was 5 months after the estimate). He knows exactly how many teams are all over and the estimate of the job (which is why it was as important for him to complete the job on time so his crew could get to his next job).

yeah... he's not painting the walls yet. just priming the walls, and painting the ceilings. then like you said, the walls will be later. supposedly our wood floors are getting delivered tomorrow... then they need 10 days to acclimate. in the mean time, he's gonna tile the bathroom, so that when the wood floor is ready to go in, they can match it up with the new tile floor in the bathroom. so i'm feeling like in the next 10 days i might actually feel like we have some progress!!! LOL
