Re: New backpack every year?
We have pottery barn ones with their name.
I pick something that will be age appropriate for a few years & they have worn the same one for past 3 years. It looks great and paid $30 total for the last one.
I’m sure when they get older, I will have to switch it up.

New backpack every year?
Dd used her first pottery barn backpack for k and 1. It lasted well and I was able to wash well.

New backpack every year?
Depends on the condition. If it is still holdin strong and not disgusting looking, they will reuse it. If not, the I will buy a new one.

Re: New backpack every year?
I bought DD a backpack for daycare when she was 2. I replaced it for 3rd grade. It held up that entire time. I wish I could have gotten the same one because of how durable it was. She is now entering 5th grade and still has the backpack from 3rd grade.
Lunch box is an entirely different story. She carries her lunchbox at camp. It takes a serious beating. I have one for school and one for camp. When the school one is looking worn it becomes the camp lunch box.

Re: New backpack every year?
No not necessary if they get a good durable one. DH and I were just talking about this yesterday. When I was a kid I reused my backpack all the way from 6th through 12th grade. I still remember it was a maroon jansport with a leather bottom and I used to rub the stitching all the time when I was bored lol... anyway it held up great all those years & I kind of was attached to it & it never occurred to me to ask for a new one ... I remember before I went to college throwing it out bc it was finally pretty worn out & being a little sad to part with it. Meanwhile DH’s Mom got him a new backpack every year and he thinks she threw out the old ones even though they were in good shape... seems super wasteful to me... why not donate it at least? Anyway I’m hoping my kids will be able to use their backpack for at least 3 or 4 years before needing to buy a replacement.

Re: New backpack every year?
No... I know most kids love getting a new backpack every year, but thankfully my son doesn't care at all. I purchased a Pottery Barn backpack and lunchbox for him when he started Kindergarten... he's going into 4th grade and is going to be using the same one. It's in great condition - even with using it all summer for travel and camps.

Re: New backpack every year?
I have for K and 1st but that's because there were cheap ones so I needed new ones. I was trying for this year to get her to pick a jansport one out and then get her to use it for more than one year. But now I am on the fence because I have heard from several people that the best part about going back to school is picking out a new backpack.

New backpack every year?
I have been, but this year I got him a more neutral one that can be used for a couple of years (I get the Pottery Barn Kids backpacks). His lunchboxes have never held up the full year though.

Re: New backpack every year?
Typically yes because it gets run down by the end of the year. Just ordered one from PB for this upcoming year and we will see how it holds up.

New backpack every year?
Ds finally got a new one last year (6th grade). He had the same LL Bean backpack since 1st grade! He needed something bigger, but it is still in great condition.

I let them get a new one every other year and they tend to get a bigger size.

What are some good brands besides pottery barn? I have always gotten the character ones for my son but last year it didn't even last the whole school year. I want to get one that will last a few years.
I buy Lands End backpacks and they hold up well. Yesterday, they were on sale for 50% off plus free shipping, but I’m not sure if that was just for 1 day. They usually run sales throughout August for backpacks.

Re: New backpack every year?
I wish that I hadn't started the tradition of a new backpack each year...my oldest is going into 6th and is very concerned about fashion, etc. so she wants a new one every year...my middle one is the opposite and will usually use it for 2 years...my little one is going into kindergarten and wants the most expensive pottery barn kids backpack that I'm sure she won't love next year, but I'm a pushover!

I'm a pushover too. She's my only so I'm always like- eh we only have one, we can splurge a little. She's going to be very spoiled though if I don't reel it in!

I get one every year but I buy the cheap 10-20 ones at Walmart. They last all year and then he uses it for summer camp, by the time camp is over it has sand and the bag is a wreck.
If I bought an expensive, quality bag, I would make him reuse it.
This! I bought my daughter a 10.00 one from Amazing Savings and my son saw cheap one at Walmart. I usually wipe it down when they get home from school but I still like getting them new ones. My kids get into different things each year anyway.

Pretty much this! Except my jansport was dk. green. DD has had the same PBK back through 2 years of prek and K. She will use the same bag this coming year for 1st grade. I plan to get her a new one next year for 2nd grade bc the current one is pretty small.

Re: New backpack every year?
I do every other year. I buy Pottery Barn and they last. Honestly, I only replace them every other because the kids want a new one and because they the white parts get a little dingy. Nothing wrong with them.
This year I let them pick out Pottery Barn lunch boxes.

New backpack every year?
We’re going on year #3 and from reading this thread, I can’t believe my daughter hasn’t asked for a new one! Which is good, bc I probably wouldn’t let her!!

New backpack every year?
My son is only going into 2nd grade, but I've bought him a new backpack every year so far. I take his previous backpack, put all the things from the school year that I want to save in it along with his class picture and roster, and write his school year, grade and teacher's name on the outside of the pack and it goes up into the attic. I have things from when I was in school, so i thought this would be a good way to organize it all. In 18 years when we're going through the attic to toss stuff, we'll probably consolidate again.

It's crazy how much the Walmart ones hold up for us. Last year was the first time I bought the 19..99 instead of the $10 because my husband told me to stop being cheap and my DS wanted an all black bag. .
He has been using it for camp and its still good, no rips or broken zipper.
