Trip insurance

I’ve always booked things together (ie airfare, hotel), and I know usually for insurance you have to buy it within a certain period after booking (I.e. 2 weeks). But when would I buy insurance if I’m booking a hotel 11 months before a trip and then things like tickets and airfare anywhere between 10 and 5 months before, in dribs and drabs? I’m specifically referencing a Disney trip, and I’m using my parents’ dvc points.

Does anyone have a favorite trip insurance company they use?

I use Insuremytrip.com. I have used them for every cruise we have taken without issue. I'm not sure how it works when you book a trip in components though. I would read the FAQ on their site.

I use World Nomads with no issues. Insuremytrip.com will pull up different plan options and you pick which plan/company works best for you

Re: Trip insurance

I've always used insuremytrip.com for trip insurance.

That being said, it may not be worth it financially to get trip insurance for your Disney trip.

Price it out and see what you would get back without any insurance.

For example, if you are just postponing and flying Southwest, you can cancel your trip and rebook without any fees.

As far as park tickets and things like that, they don't lose their value so you wouldn't be reimbursed for them - you'd just hold onto them for next time.

The meal plan (if you are getting it) can be canceled if you never check in.

As far as the DVC points, unless you are paying your parents for the rental, you have no exposure there. If you cancel 31 days before, they get their points back (subject to banking policies) with no loss.

Trip insurance

You can buy insurance on the different parts separately. I did for my last Disney trip.

Re: Trip insurance

I was going to buy trip insurance through my agent and he kept telling me we didn’t have to do it until 30 days our (for Disney). When I finally asked him to get me a price it was astronomical and didn’t even cover flights. I looked online way after I booked and was able to get Allianz and it was much cheaper and included everything I wanted.

You can absolutely buy it piece by piece. But a trip on dvc points is not the same as a regular Disney trip. If something happens where you have to cancel say 6 months out and you’re not paying for the points (using your parents points for example), you’d suffer no loss - so there’s nothing to insure. If you are paying to rent the points you’d need to make sure that the insurance covers private timeshare rentals. If going through an agency to rent the points (like David’s) they have an insurance company they recommend but the coverage is limited.

Don’t pay for trip insurance if you won’t incur an actual loss.

Re: Trip insurance

These are great points! It is just the airline I’d be concerned about. Likely jet blue, possibly southwest. My parents are giving us their points.

I know on Southwest you can cancel right up to the day before and get full credit for a future flight. We were flying to Florida during Hurricane Matthew and i called to ask my options.
Luckily the storm missed our destination and we flew out as planned but they told me you can cancel and get full credit

JetBlue charges 100 to change but I think they offer their own insurance. Southwest you can change up to 15 minutes prior to departure time!

Re: Trip insurance

Thanks - I’ll check this all out. We are doing a cruise with our family the following year (Alaska) so should this trip fall through for any reason at all, it would likely be on hold for another 2 years at the least.
