Missing child's first day of pre-k
I was just called to start a county job on Sept 5, with my son's first ever day of Pre-K 3 being Sept 6. I am gutted, to say the least, that I will be missing his first day. How many other mom's have had to do this and how do you cope?

Re: Missing child's first day of pre-k
When you say missing his first day- what do you mean? Missing drop off? Who will be taking him? I have worked every one of DD's first days of school. I get her dressed, take pictures, and DH puts her on the bus. It never bothered me because she was in school all day and then would just tell me all about it when I got home that night. Such is the life of a working mom

My husband will drop him off and pick him up. He only goes from 12:15 - 2:45, so I know this sounds so silly. I dont know my exact hours, but I will be missing it regardless.

With those hours all working moms will miss dropping off and picking up on the first day. It will be fine. He has his dad bringing him so its not like it will be a distant family member or a babysitter. And you'll hear all about it when you get home! Take pictures in the morning before you go to work if you can, or have DH takes lots of pictures

Take pictures before you leave for work. Bring him home a special treat to celebrate his first day.
Being a working mom really sucks sometimes, but you're not alone.

This. My twins start nursery this year. Both DH & myself have to work- my MIL is taking them to orientation, and then the next day she will be the one who drops them off for their first day. My boys start 2nd & K next Tuesday. DH will be getting them on the bus. I get it, it makes me sad too. But I have no recollection of one first day of school my entire childhood- the creepy neighbor could have dropped me off for all I know. So I hope that my kids will never even remember who was there and who wasn't. I do my best to make memories with my kids, when I can. It doesn't have to be a special day for that. Sending

Missing child's first day of pre-k
Thank you everyone. I knew what the answers would be, but I needed to hear it from other working moms. I've always had a lot of flexibility at my current job, but with this new one, they obviously won't allow me taking a day (especially one of my first days) off for my sons first day of school.

I've missed every first day for my older two, will miss my little one's this coming week, and will miss my new baby's first days...they will all survive even though it breaks my heart each time. My husband always takes the morning off for the first day and takes lots of pictures. Don't beat yourself up; you are working to better the life of your family!

Re: Missing child's first day of pre-k
I arranged a day off for my DS (1st child)’s first day of preschool. It was a vacation day and took a LOT to arrange.
He left without a second glance and when it came time to come home, he GRABBED on the table and cried that he didn’t want to leave.
All the rest of the kids just went in the bus from then on for even the first day.
Point of my story: you aren’t missing much.

Congrats on your new job! It does suck that you have to miss the first day this year because of work. But, by next year you will have time accrued and can put in to take off the first day of school... that’s what I always do. It’ll be ok!

Congrats on your new job! I’ve never been there for my childrens’ first days nor for their orientations. I work in the schools and they won’t let me out this early on. It stinks but it is what it is.

My coworker takes the day off every year. I just take pics before putting him on the bus.
