medical bills and collections - question
can a hospital send your account to collections if:
* the first time they billed you was about three months after your procedure * you make a payment towards the balance every month, but it is nowhere near the full amount
my sister had a small medical procedure at the beginning of the year. she's not doing well financially, but she is chipping away at the bill.
i thought they could only send you to collections if you were not making any attempt to pay the debt.

Did your sister reach an agreement with the hospital to accept installment payments? If not, she should call there to ask about that

She should also ask for financial hardship paperwork. When I did that a few years back during a hard time and they reduced the total bill by a certain %.

Yes they can send you to collections. But all you have to do is set up a payment plan with the hospital/ doctor
