Thoughts on collecting for class supplies

One of the moms in the school for every class she does this thing where instead of having the teacher ask for things like tissues or paper towels the mom collects $10 from every child (separate from parties or anything) and then she will buy the stuff in bulk for the teachers. She says with the extra money they decide as a class what to do with it at the end.
This woman has been class mom for every class. Her son was in my son's 1st grade class last year so I sent in the $10 in addition to the other stuff they collect.
This year her daughter is in my older son's 4th grade homeroom. At back to school she made the same announcement about collecting $10.
I know her younger son is in some of my friend;s kids classes and they said they're not happy with it. It adds up to over $200 obviously and that seems like a lot.
Just getting your thoughts if you think it's a good idea or would rather send in stuff yourself every once in a while when the teacher needs. I do see both sides.
Thanks!

ETA - in terms of "supplies" I meant the paper towels, wipes and tissues. Not the kid's school supplies or pencils, glue, etc.

I have enough to worry about between home, work, and family. I hate when I have to send extra things in for school because who has time to make an extra tip to the store? I'd much prefer just sending in $10 and letting the class mom and/or teacher get what they need.

Re: Thoughts on collecting for class supplies

I am a class mom. I collect $5 from every parent to cover the crafts I do with the kids in class. We do sewing, clay projects, painting, wood working, and some foam projects. It offsets that cost. I don't collect class supply money. I just give extra glue sticks, wipes, tissues, etc. The teacher asks for the stuff and some give, others don't.

I don't think the $10 would bother me if it was all I would need to contribute for supplies throughout the year. But if she is the only mom/class that does it, than maybe I would be hesitant.
If it is only covering paper towels & tissues, wouldn't $100 be enough (only $5 per child)? Or does it cover other things (pencils, pens, scissors, folders, notebooks etc)?

I think that's what a few moms are thinking. I know there are over 20 kids in the class. Maybe 22 - 23. I think $5 would be good, but if it's easier for the teacher who knows. From what it sounds like there's always extra.

I already did send in tissues and paper towels as well before the back to school night when it was mentioned.

Re: Thoughts on collecting for class supplies

Part of our supply list at the beginning of the year includes multiple boxes of tissues and wipes, a big thing of ziploc bags, four dry erase markers PER KID, not to mention a ton of community supplies that I'm sure I'll never see again. So if they ask for another dime out of me I'd laugh them out of the room.

It sounds like those things wouldn't be on your supply list if they're asking for the money though. They use the $10 to buy the communal supplies. So you wouldn't have to send in anything other than your kids individual supplies. Which is convenient for sure and it's only $10.

That being said, $10 per kid seems like a lot. $5 seems like too little though. I guess it's easier to round up and have a little left over. I would be annoyed if it seemed like they're pocketing the rest.

Re: Thoughts on collecting for class supplies

I would happily give $10 to the class. I sent it extra supplies at the start of the year and during open house night I picked off two items from their "wish tree" and sent those in - so far I have spent about $35 so yeah $10 would be fine with me.

Re: Thoughts on collecting for class supplies

although my kid is past school age... i was a LAZY mom when it came to these type of things.

i would HAPPILY send in $10 IF it meant they would leave me the hell alone about bringing any extra stuff.

i understand that trips and parties are separate.

i like easy. a $10 bill is easy.

Ok well thinking about what they asked of us, the community supplies (wipes, tissues, ziploc bags) probably equaled out to about $10. If every child sent this in, they would have way too many supplies at the end of the year. So I guess I wouldn't have a problem sending in the $10, although I think $5 would probably be sufficient.

I would be ok with it- I typically send in extra tissues and wipes throughout the year since I know my kid is a slob....

Re: Thoughts on collecting for class supplies

Personally, I’d love it because I spend way more than $10 on those extra supplies a year for each of my kids classes. I also think it’s really fair because as a Pep mom, you would be surprised how few families actually donate. I always figured everyone was donating, but when I was in charge last year, I saw the reality, so it fell on me to chip in a lot more or the teacher cover costs.

What did they do with the extra money at the end of the year when your son was in the class with her child last year?

I don't know. Never thought about it too much till a few moms this year from another class complained.

Re: Thoughts on collecting for class supplies

I have been a class mom several times From experience you are usually lucky if you get money from half the class. I have put in extra money to cover for those who don’t send in money. I think it’s nice that she is willing to do that.

Which is ballsy because they are assuming that everyone in the class contributes.

I am friendly with other moms who have done the collections for class gifts. And when my son was in 4th, he was in a 12:1 and there were 12 kids, only 7 sent the $10 that was requested. So the poor teacher got a $70 gc. I know it isn't the same thing, but it's an example how not everyone contributes.

ETA: To answer the original question, I wouldn't care and gladly would send it in

Although there are apprx 23 kids in the class, I'm sure she doesn't get money from every parent. I would be surprised if she collects $200 for the class.

I love it. I'm a teacher and often send home a wish list for items list this and rarely do more than one or two people contribute.

I don't know, I feel like she must get money from the majority of the kids if she does this every year and has enough left over for the class to use as they please.

If you had to pony up extra money to cover the kids who didn't contribute, wouldn't you stop doing it?

Obviously, I'd send it. Who wants to be the jerk who doesn't send in $10?

Re: Thoughts on collecting for class supplies

I've been class mom for 3 years and the part I hate is the collecting money. It is a PIA to get people to send in money, even $5. Sometimes teachers need to ask more than once to get things they need for the benefit of our children (eg markers.) In 1st my son had an amazing teacher and I remember one little girl who specifically had lots of behavior issues and the teacher would often give her 1 on 1 help bc she struggled so much (I saw it when I volunteered in the classroom) - at the end of the school year I collected $ for a gift from the class and this parent sent in $5. $5! Finances were not a factor. People don't give as much or as often as most people assume that they do.

I’d much rather give money then have to go to the tire and hunt down the most random additional supplies and then make my daughter lug them to school, to before care, until she finally gets to class. I’d rather give $20 if it means they won’t bother me for the rest of the year. I don’t even care if there is extra left over And someone pockets it
