Thoughts on not being allowed to observe DS's preschool class
Due to some issues we have been having with DS at school, I contacted the director and asked her if I would be able to observe him and his class for a 1/2 hr. and meet with the SEIT and have the SEIT go over the behavior modifications they are implementing with him at school. I also would like to get an idea of what his attention span, behavior is like as opposed to the 16 other kids in the class. The director told me no. She said it would be a distraction and she told me that he would not act the same with the there so I would not get an accurate read on the situation.
Thoughts?????

Ok at first, reading the topic, I thought He11 no you won't keep me from observing my child.
But yes I can see the distraction. Can you observe him without being IN the room? Because for that I can't see why it wouldn't be allowed. And if he can't SEE you then he'd act normally, right?

Unfortunately the classrooms are not set up like that. They do have doors to the classroom where I could peak through the window but I am sure one of the kids would see me.
I have sat in on DS's speech and OT sessions in the past and was NOT a distraction at all. He actually performed better with me there which is why I think the director won't allow it.
ETA: Part of the reason I want to observe is so that I can get a better idea of what type of program/school is best for him next year for pre-k to get him ready for kindergarten.

This is tough bc I think you have a perfectly valid reason to want to observe him but at the same time, the director is 100% correct. It would be too much of a distraction to other children and to him, which would lead to an inaccurate read. Hope everything works out!

Re: Thoughts on not being allowed to observe DS's preschool class
As a teacher, I work with kids everyday in their "usual" environment. They COMPLETELY change during class parties/trips when there are parents/visitors in the room. Some behave better than their usual and others are far worse. I don't think you would have an accurate read by being in the classroom with him.
I think it would be best to talk to the teacher. They know how long the kids are able to pay attention and can tell you where your child fits into the mix.

I was going to suggest video too, I don't know if that is allowed or an option. We don't observe either, the kids get totally distracted sometimes even if they see a mom at the door before pick up time!
