Name Calling
My DD is a big girl. Very tall for her age and overweight as well. We are working on that. She told me on Friday that a girl in her class called her fat. We had a long convo and I think she's ok (as ok as a 6 year old can be after hearing that).
Now, how would you handle it? Would you let it go until the next time? (hopefully there won't be one).
Would you say something to the girls mother?
Would you say something to the school?
Or any other way you would handle it?
TIA.

Re: Name Calling
I would maybe bring it to the attention of the teacher so maybe she could have a lesson on name calling is not acceptable. They are 6 and still learning and that way the teacher would also be aware to keep an eye out.

Re: Name Calling
I don't know how correct it is now. . . but as a fat kid, my mom helped me practice comebacks. I didn't just take it. I said something back. Sometimes they made no sense, but at least I was standing up for myself.
Maybe you can practice scenarios that may come up, not just about being fat.

It's funny because my first instinct was "well, tell her she has a mustache". But, that seems so wrong. LOL!!!
My DD is super passive outside of the house, so she'd never say anything like that. But, I'll work on it. Thanks!

A 6 year old with a mustache!
Maybe in the scenarios, instead of making fun of the person she can say something positive about herself. For example if someone says you are fat, she can say "no I'm not, I'm super strong!"
In school some kid told me, why are you so hairy?!?!? (yes I was a fat hairy kid lol!) I told him, I'm hairy cause I'm smart. Made no sense, but he never bothered me again.

This makes me so upset. I'm not one to run to the teacher for much but in this case I definitely would. Hopefully the teacher can nip it in the bud right away. Your daughter shouldn't have to learn how to defend herself against that kind of garbage.

This is such a great idea.
OP, I’m sorry this happened to your daughter. I would absolutely contact the teacher.

You laugh but this was my niece. She is Portuguese and it started showing when she was 6. Actually, kids would comment on it too. She is so pale and her hair is dark.
She was the hairy kid, poor thing.
I would definitely tell the teacher and hope she speaks to the class as well as the girls mom. I would hope someone would tell me if my son was acting like a jerk and being mean to another kid. I have no tolerance for bullying.

Re: Name Calling
My daughter was getting made fun of for being short. She is really, really short for her age. I told her to say "Well I will grow, but your face will always be ugly." Then we had a good laugh and I told her to just ignore it. She would never tell anyone they have an ugly face just so people don't go crazy.
I think making the teacher aware is probably your best bet but girls are ruthless so I agree with the other poster with giving your daughter comebacks (not as harsh as mine) and making sure she knows that everyone comes in different shapes, sizes, colors etc. and no one is better than the other.

I would write a note to the teacher and explain what happened. She might not be aware it was even said.
I love the idea about putting a positive spin on it and saying that she is strong. I wouldn't start teaching for her to make a comeback like you are ugly, have a mustache, etc because that isnt teaching anything. Making fun of people is wrong if you are doing it or doing it as a comeback. Kids are mean! My son is in Kindgarten now and right now they all appear nice but I am just waiting for the meanness to kick in!

Do people do this -- go to the childs parent over the teacher? My kid just started K so im not sure how this all works but I would not have thought to do that.
OP im sorry your daughter was called names. Kids are cruel. I would never want to go back and start over. I try to remind myself of this when my DS is driving me crazy. School is hard.

I am so not confrontational so I probably would not speak to the parent....

Ditto. I think it would have to be something really BAD for me to ever step to another parent.

I wrote the teacher a note and she said she would keep an eye on them. And, I do see the mom from time to time at the park. If it happens again, I will be talking to her. Ugh, this parenting life sucks.
