Calling all Working SAHM..How do you do it?

How did you find PT work for two days a week or rather find employment working from home?

Re: Calling all Working SAHM..How do you do it?

My boss didn't want anyone else doing my job while I was out and set me up with a home office for super light duty tasks til I came back from maternity leave.

When I told him I couldn't come back full time, he agreed that it was working from home so why change it. I then added more work, but at the same time the business has gotten slower so its working.

Some days are a juggle, and I work on the computer late at night to make up for what I cannot get done during the day - but all in all I have a pretty sweet deal! Chat Icon

I'm a pharmacist so they basically take whatever you are willing to give them. Right now I work 2 nights a week from 2-10pm. My mom watches DD until DH gets home at 5. So far it's working out really well for us.

Not working right now, but when I was working p/t, it was a job with family, so they were of course understanding of my situation. I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise.

Re: Calling all Working SAHM..How do you do it?

I left my old job 2 years ago to do my student teaching. After having DS I was only subbing when they needed me on Mondays (my mom has off Mondays, to pay a babysitter wouldn't be worth it, I'd be working for nothing!). This past June my old job asked me to come back 2 days a week and now that school is back in they let me take off when I get called to sub on Mondays. I got lucky!

My husband ended up needing someone to process all his paperwork. He has been trying for years to get me to work for him. So I left teaching and now work pt from home for him. I work when dd sleeps for about 2 1/2 hours in the pm and now she goes to Nursery School 2 days a week for a few hours in the morning.

If you are looking to stay at home you might want to talk to people. You never know. Someone might know someone who is looking to fill a position like that.

Re: Calling all Working SAHM..How do you do it?

I graduated in May with my Masters in Education and found a job that is PT right now running an afterschool program...pay is good for PT work and my hours are 1-5....my DH gets home at 2:30-3pm so my dad comes over and watches her for 2 hours a day...it is what I wanted right now to ease myself back into working

Re: Calling all Working SAHM..How do you do it?

I started my off the books job while PG and she offered to let me bring DD with me to work.....she has a pak n play to nap in, a high chair to eat in, a walker to roam in, and 2 other people that help care for her while I work. It's tough bringing her when there is a lot to do, but priceless to be able to watch her grow and work at the same time.

Although I'd MUCH prefer to be a FT SAHM.

My company lets me work from home 2 days a week. Right now we are moving offices, so I will go in 1 day a week for the next 2 months or so to my clients building.

Honestly, it was something that I aprroached my manager's with when I was prego w/Emma. There was no way I could commute 5 hours a day with a newborn, so they let me work from home 2 days a week.

When baby #2 comes in May, I will be leaving my job - Probably before then. Even working from home 2 days week is still rough when you have that kind of commute.

It's 5 hours total - About 2 1/2 each way. I work downtown NYC - Live in East Setauket.

Re: Calling all Working SAHM..How do you do it?

I work from home MWF and go into the city on T and Th. WHen I was pregnant I approached my boss about it and he was fine with it. I wasn't sure how long they would go for it but my DD is 17 months now and I am expecting #2 in December. It is great to be home with my DD but it is really hard to get much work done. My days home are more stressful than my days in the office but I wouldn't trade them for anything. Not sure what we are going to do when #2 arrives. I will definately need to get some help.

This is pretty much the same thing that happened to me. I was working in NYC and communting 2 hours a day when I was 8months pregnant. I told him I couldn't do it anymore so we work something out that I could work from home. After DD was born I said there was no way I was going to back to NYC and he offered me a job from home. It's less $$, but he pays me cash out of his own pocket so I make out pretty well. It's really really tough to work from home and take care of DD. I didn't have maternity leave and had to go back to work right away (this was the only way I could continue from home since there was no one to cover for me). Even on the worst days its so worth it for me.

Wow, sounds like most of you really lucked out. I KNOW that my job is not flexible. When I was pregnant with DS last year, I was working until 7-8 o'clock at night. I almost felt like my boss was making me work longer hours.....

That's great for all of you. I hope that I can happen upon a great situation.

Re: Calling all Working SAHM..How do you do it?

My company let me work from home or come into the office when I wanted to after my first was born. They just really needed my expertise in my field because they don't have another "air quality" expert in the office. I worked 1-2 days a week because DH has off a day during the week and it worked out well.

Now that DD is 5 months old, and I have 2, I have not gone back to work at all. I am not sure if I will. I could always use the money, but I find it too stressful to be worrying about work with everything else I have going on. So I will see. My company said they will take me back PT or FT at any time.
