Gifts for a Toddler in ICU
Good Morning,
I have a friend whose son just had major eye and Brain surgery. He is currently in LIJ Schneiders Childrens Hospital. (very scary situation)
Anyway, i called the hospital and they do not allow flowers and only allow mylar balloons. I can send toys and stuffed animals etc
I would like to send something over there for the mommy and ofcourse her son.
Any Ideas? and what places i can order from?
Thanks

Re: Gifts for a Toddler in ICU
How old is he? Is he awake enough to play with toys?
I'd get some things to entertain him in the hospital- coloring books and crayons or even better the Melissa & Doug on the go sets- like the Water Wows or Magic Color sets. There's also some magnetic all in one sets like Mickey Mouse that could be fun. A puzzle? My DD is 2.5 and got an Etch-a-Sketch freestyle for Christmas and loves it. That or I hear those boogie boards are really good.
As for your friend, ugh, that's tough. Maybe just a giftcard to a quick serve restaurant nearby so she can be close but still grab a bite to eat... something that's not from the crappy hospital cafeteria.

Gifts for a Toddler in ICU
My daughter was in that hospital (It's actually Cohen's Childrens hospital now). Toys are a good idea because it gets very boring for them laying there all day. Maybe some action figures or coloring books with crayons? For mom - magazines or a book. Maybe snacks that she can keep in the room. That was the hard part for me bc I didn't want to leave my DD alone but I would be starving lol. Even snack for him might be good. My dd got a really nice cozy blanket and that cheered her up a lot. I even stole it a few times bc its so uncomfortable sleeping there!

Re: Gifts for a Toddler in ICU
A friend of mine was there with her son for a couple weeks and someone bought her new clothes to change Into. She was really happy because she went there as an emergency and ended up there for quite a while. She thought it was super nice and needed at the time. She wasn’t thinking of herself obviously and hadn’t changed in days. Not sure if that works in every situation though.

Re: Gifts for a Toddler in ICU
I was in the ICU with my 2 year old DD earlier this winter for a week and here are a few things I remember we felt like we needed:
Easily packed toys/things to entertain my DD - We recently got her this Minnie Mouse Busy Book (it comes in other characters for boys) that comes with stickers, little figures and a fold up play mat, and stories...it's GREAT for on-the-go trips and it all packs up nicely into this little box. It's perfect for a hospital stay. The Melissa and Doug Water Wow books are also good. Books of any type were great especially to distract her while she got her medicines.
She also really relied on stuffed animals and a nice cozy blanket (the ones the hospitals have are stiff and uncomfortable) during her time there. And believe it or not, pajamas! Between all the medicines, bodily fluids, and food, we needed to change her clothes a lot more often then I expected. But Pajamas are the easiest and most comfortable.
For mom...snacks, a nice pair of sweats, also a comfy blanket, a good book, and anything that can make her feel human. I spent all my time laying in the bed/crib with my DD. I didnt even have a chance to shower. So, extra clothes, scented wipes to make her feel a little more human when she cant get away to shower, anything like that. And...a small bottle of wine Believe it or not, someone brought us a small bottle of wine and DH and I poured that sh!t into some Styrofoam coffee cups one night to decompress.
These are the busy books:
Mickey Busy Book
Paw Patrol Busy Book
Thomas & Friends Busy Book

They are come-to-life and you scan the pages with a free app on your phone or tablet and they come to life in augmented reality.Kids can play games and interact with the pages
They're super cool and all my littles love them.

Gifts for a Toddler in ICU
My sonhas been in ICU, and I feel like anything to keep busy, coloring, books, toys. Does the hospital have an amazon locker center she can pick up? Can she get blankets or pillows for her to have in icu? I hate the uncomfortable chair beds! Also for the mom gift card to the food available there. My son is usually in stony brook and they have the Ronald McDonald house but I always am at Starbucks in the hospital.

Re: Gifts for a Toddler in ICU
I’ve heard people say they’ve appreciated a nice tote bag to schlep everything back and forth in to and from the hospital.

Re: Gifts for a Toddler in ICU
Gift cards for the family are the best. They can use it to order/pick up food or whatever they need.
I'm an Oncology RN and see families so stressed out. I know that a visa gift card can be such an amazing gift so they don't have to worry so much.
