pre-k poll
I want to see how many have full day pre-k in their districts... My district is only 2 hours and I'm kind of annoyed considering all of the NYC DOE districts are all full day now!

i didn't answer the poll. i heard our school now offers free full time which is from i think 9-2 and part time but its a lottery and they only choose it think 20 kids some ridiculous low number considering there are 5 elementary schools in our district

That's crazy. Why not double the number of students and make it all half day?
because half day is useless IMO. half day is like 2.5 hours, which means all FT working parents need to arrange for an at-home sitter for the rest of the work day. The issue I'm having with this is I'm better off just keeping DD at daycare because it's cheaper than hiring an at-home sitter. Stinks to have to keep her from real school until kindergarten, though

My district is a lottery for part time morning or afternoons. I feel most of the surrounding towns by me don’t offer anything.

Our county has a lottery for UPK. Some districts have full day.
Our daycare offered UPK so it worked out nicely for DS2 - since they also had full day kids (he had full day instruction and a tuition break).
Before they offered UPK most people who had their children there didn’t apply for it.

Even full day pre k is useless for working parents .
It's like 9 to 3 or whatever. Not enough for a full work day

I just think only having 20 slots is also useless. I think my district has at least 10 classes so there are plenty of people who are able to take advantage. Whether it's parents who SAH, have flexible work schedules, have grandparents who watch the kids, nannies that bring them. I've even seen daycare providers take kids to and from. I can't imagine 9-2 being easy on working parents either. Our district doesn't provide transportation at all either.

We have half day AM or PM sessions (2.5 hours). There's around 250 free lottery spots. If you aren't chosen for lottery, there are a certain number of paid tuition spots also. Luckily my daughter got chosen in the lottery.

Mine does. I think it's a lottery but I'm not sure. I never looked into it because we will never use it. Like you said 9-2 is useless and also my DD is a December birthday so by the time they would take her I would already have her in kindergarten.

It depends on census info - that is probably dated.
For full day districts had to apply for it. My district didn’t apply at the time because they had half day K so they didn’t feel right to offer full day PreK. Our district only has 29 slots but the districts around us have more and most who apply get it.

The school my kids attend (or will attend) for pre-k is 2 hours 45 min, either 3 or 4 Times a week

they offer both either way its a lottery and at least when my kids were that age i remember the number being really low. also its not even in our schools its part of another prek program that parents pay for to go to so thats why i assume they only pick a about 20kids

this is true FT is also useless for working parents.
OP what daycare do you use. when my kids went the whole daycare was really kind of setup as a school setting. as they got older it was treated more like a school setting and by PREK they basically did a school setting from 9-4 and then before and after that i guess it was less a school setting meaning no lesson plan or that much structure.

Our district doesn't offer pre-k. They've talked about voting on it a few times in recent years but it never even gets to a vote. I'm sure it would be voted down anyway.

It's a woman who watches from her home with 1-2 helpers depending on the day.. They do crafts and stuff like that, but it's not really structured like a school. I will say, they really limit the TV which I like, and the woman is really great about applying for tons of grants to buy STEM toys and puzzles for the kids. She has gotten a ton of things funded in the last couple of years. So the kids are definitely learning and everything, but it's still not the same routine as a regular daycare center... I just get so angry seeing all these city schools getting full day pre-k (and some getting full day 3-k!), and much of LI is still like 2 hours per day or nothing at all

Ours, too! The one plus of living in NYC was that DS got to go to UPK. DD does not. And considering the taxes we pay, it's ridiculous.

I have a friend who sends her son to preschool at a catholic school that has before and after care. I think she pays around $1k a month which is less than I pay for preschool/daycare.

It’s Pre-K, not babysitting. I think 3 hours is more than enough for that age. Our district has AM and PM sessions to accommodate more kids. Does your daycare provide a Pre-K curriculum?
I work and still need childcare after regular school hours—since my kids get home at 3:30 and I’m not home for 3 hours after that. If I didn’t work so close to home I would probably also need before care since they get on the bus at 8:50

I agree with this.
My daycare has a play based approach and I like it a lot. These kids will spend the next 20 years in school - I don't think there is a need to real schooling until Kindergarten and even then I think they should allow for kids to be kids.
I see some of my friend's kids have 20 minutes of HW to complete with a 3 or 4 year old and I personally think that is ridiculous.

I'm in Nassau county and there's basically zero options for Pre-K (4s) that aren't daycare or part day through Catholic/Private schools and cost a small fortune.
On the flip side, the school DD is attending in the fall in Queens for nursery has UPK but since I don't live in the 5 boroughs she's not eligible to attend. Period. Not even if we were willing to pay for it like we are doing for nursery.
It's so crappy and really puts me in a tough position. Luckily, I found another school in Queens close by that does full day Pre-K that you pay for so she can go there next year. But I hate having to move her around! They really don't make it easy for full time working parents. AT ALL.
ETA: DD has been in daycare since she was 4 months old... full day daycare since she was a year. It costs a friggin fortune. She's switching to full day nursery (a 3s program) in September because it is literally HALF the cost of daycare.

I live in NYC and both my children had/have UPK. All districts should offer something, half day is fine IMO, as a working mom I benefit from the full day as I would need daycare otherwise but I do not feel they necessarily need a full day of school.
