SPOILERS Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?

I watched it yesterday. 2 things that really made me be like WTF (although the whole thing did) was when the Mom put Jan on a plane to go work at his amusement park. Then when the sisters being interviewed said something to the affect that the parents didn’t want to ask what was going on because it was too painful in, how about don’t you think what your sister was going through was more painful???

This was so disturbing. It’s so sad how the victim says she had to help her parents get over their guilt. Wtf she should never speak to them again!

I was in shock watching this- like it's the 70's we had stranger danger when I was a kid in the 70's.

I was also shocked when the Dad says the worst day of his life was when he served the cheating wife divorce papers?? Oh the jerking off of your neighbor, the abduction of your daughter - no big deal...

I also can't believe Jan believes there are Aliens at 12??? Like really???

I wonder what happened to Gail and B's kids....

I'm also curious. I think he had a daughter, I wonder if he abused her.

So let me get this straight.
He hit on the mother. And she liked it.

He takes the father for a ride and says his wife can't satisfy him sexually and can HE please give him some relief.
And the FATHER jerks him off??

What??

Did I hear that incorrectly?

And then your 12 year old daughter disappears with this psycho and you don't think anything of it?

What kind of sickos were ALL of these people?
They had to have mental problems, the whole lot of them.

And he admits it on camera all these years later.

Yeah, ok.

And then he tells them that part of his therapy (for being a pedophile mind you) is to spend some time alone with their daughters. And they are like- yeah, sounds reasonable. You can sleep in her bed a few nights a week.

People like this shouldn't be allowed to have kids.

I'm so disgusted with these animals.

This all happened within the first 20 minutes
I was too disgusted to continue watching

SPOILERS Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?

I started watching last night and obvs knew the story from this thread, but Jeeeeeeesus, it was still really hard to watch.

ETA: I was appalled when the father said the breakup of their marriage was the worst day of his life. Hmmmm, how about the days when your daughter was missing, you asshat!!

Yup these parents should be locked up.

I do think the religion was a big factor. Some of these religions are almost cult-like with the blind devotion to one another. NOT that it’s an excuse for these parents. Unbelievable.

I agree with all of you. Her parents sound ridiculous! I can't get past the dad jerking this guy off.... I can't unhear certain things, and I wish I did.
Did they ever say what happened to B's wife and kids? I don't remember this at all

Finally watched it too! Those parents FAILED their daughter EVERY SINGLE step of the way. They basically served her up to him a silver platter. I truly don't understand how they could've been SO dumb and easily manipulated. The whole story was absolutely crazy!

For everyone who watched it and is saying how ridiculous it is; did any of you pick up on the fact that they are LDS? That right there was a huge red flag. If you research LDS/elders/etc, their ignorance is common to the religion. Especially in the 70s. LDS shun outside information and they are basically brainwashed. These people didn't know any better because they were born and raised in a religion that taught them from a very young age NOT TO QUESTION information/beliefs/etc UNLESS it comes from elders. It made a whole lot of effed up sense to understand that her family was not necessarily ignorant because they just didn't care, they probably had no common sense enough to even realize that what was happening was wrong.

They ALLOWED a grown ass man to SLEEP alongside their CHILD 4-5 days a week for MONTHS! They ALLOWED their CHILD to go out with this man unattended. They were NOT in control of their own child, instead they ALLOWED some random guy to call the shots and do whatever the hell he wanted with THEIR CHILD. I really don't care what religion they are, there is simply NO excuse or rationale to explain the complete lack of parenting and common sense here. They FAILED that girl over and over and over again.

The whole thing is twisted, sad, scary, and puzzling. The fact that they then went on to write a book about it, profit from it, etc makes me scratch my head. Yes, i agree with sharing your story to prevent people from making similar mistakes, and to out him, but jeez. It seemed so nonchalant to them.
I agree with PP that being in the LDS community did not help these people one bit. Just my opinion but I believe that whole church is about brainwashing to begin with... so theres that.

I just read the obit that someone posted here. It says he was survived by his wife Deanna... Wasnt his wife in the doc named something else?

EDITED TO ADD: WHY oh WHY was that brother so nonchalant as well about his brother being a pedo. "Oh he wanted to be with little girls, thats weird, but that was his thing -- we all knew it... ok, pass me a beer".....

I've seen that same interview question and they show the guy from the Fyre Festival doc who said he was going to blow the head of customs in the Bahamas to get the water trucks released for Billy.

Re: SPOILERS Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?

Has anyone read the vanity fair article from the writer or producer? She basically stated that when she was in the middle of editing, everyone editing had to take 6 weeks off because it was just too screwed up and they had a hard time with everything. She also stated that the dad (who died in November) was ok with how this documentary showed him because he knew he messed up and just wanted people to learn from his mistakes. So while I think those parents are vile, at least the dad finally realized his mistakes, but that mother, I think if “B” was alive, she’d still be screwing him.

I never said they didn't fail her. What I did say is that if anyone has any knowledge of 1970s-era LDS it's a cultish religion that basically brainwashed people into not even having the ability to question that it was wrong. They probably knew on some level but had no idea how to act on it. I am not excusing their behavior and role, just proffering another perspective as to why they lacked such common sense in the first place.

I totally understand your point. I just cannot wrap my head around being so clueless as a parent that you would allow these things to happen in the first place. At what point does common sense kick in? Just a crazy story!!

I completely agree. It doesn't make sense at all to an outside viewer. I think the dad was the only one who felt remorseful. Clearly he's gay and was closeted and B used that to his advantage. The mother though, she is worse in my eyes. I think she probably allowed it to happen and was more aware of what was going on and has feigned ignorance and innocence. You know how like a lie eventually becomes a persons "truth" because they've committed to it and told it so many times? I think that's what the mom did; she let her daughter become collateral damage because she was so far gone with B herself. If anyone is just as much of a monster as B, it's the mom.

I 100% agree with you on all of these points.

I absolutely think that father was in the closet, truthfully it's the ONLY explanation for why he would've SO easily given "B" a hand job. NO straight man that I know of would EVER do such a thing. I do think he felt remorse whereas the mother still seemed to have her head in the clouds.

I am actually surprised that their daughter wasn't estranged from them or more angry with them for what happened. I guess everyone copes in their own way.
