Well, I didn’t get the job. :( And now she’s ramped up the issues with me bc I went to HR. I’m going to talk to HR to see if it’s a possibility to get moved to another department. I doubt it since I’m not healthcare but it can’t hurt to ask!

If you went to HR and she is giving you issues because of it, that is retaliation which is against the law. You HAVE to go to HR and make a formal complaint against her. You should not have to be moved because she is harassing you.

Retaliation

Yep this. this is HUGE actually.

Well, the issue is that I can't *prove* that it's out of retaliation. She's been writing me up for a year so technically, it looks like I'm an awful employee. My only saving grace is that she wrote me up for bad handwriting, but I feel that puts me in the category of her harassing me. She also wrote my coworker up for "non-verbal communication" which is a fancy way of saying that she got written up for the looks on her face!

I'm going to take what I have to HR and see what they can do for me. I wish I was in a position of quitting but I'm a single mom and can't afford to lose the pay and benefits.

In the private sector, write ups are usually (not always) the firsts step towards firing. Do they come up with a plan for you to address the issues you're being written up for?

Re: How to handle horrible boss?

How does HR view all of these write ups ?
Do they take them seriously, or think of them as petty, as in the case of "Bad handwriting" and "non-verbal communication.
Is your boss doing an excessive number of write ups, compared to other managers ?
She is harassing and downright bullying you to create a situation where you cannot perform your job well.
Honestly, I think that there is no one capable of doing a good job in this woman's eyes.

It is just a real sucky situation for you, and I do hope it resolves itself soon. Hang in there.

Do you know if your boss is consulting HR when she writes you up? It is possible that she is keeping her own files and not going through official channels. Even though I personally don't trust HR as far as I can throw them, they wouldn't agree to some of the things she has written you up for. I'd ask HR to see your personnel file. It is your right to see what's in it.

If you haven't already, you need to start documenting her harassment - date, time, witnesses and what happened (stick to the facts and be as detailed as possible). Do not use your work computer to do this. Keep them on your personal cell phone or tablet in a password protected file. She's been building a case against you for a long time, it's time for you to build yours. Also, if she writes you up again, do not sign the document and write a formal rebuttal that is CC'ed to HR.

I agree with a previous poster, when a person is written up they are usually given a written plan clearly defining expectations, a detailed plan to correct the issues and a timeframe in which the issues will be reevaluated (usually 6 months). After the reevaluation, if everything has been corrected, the write up should be removed from your personnel record.

Honestly I would have quit by now. I’m not sure how you are dealing with all this. I feel like this scenario is perfectly reasonable to resign without having another job lined up. Secure some references and write your grievances in a resignation letter. And is her name Loretta? I have to ask because I had a decrepit boss like this once who’s name was Loretta. She ended up leaving my company and going into education

I have a What Would You Do question.

I have a job interview for a position that's almost all event planning. I have it in my background, and I can definitely do it, but it's not at all something that I would enjoy doing since I've moved on to enjoying working more in data and reporting. However, I don't have many other options for getting out of my current situation (and I think my boss is setting me up to fire me).

Would you take a job you know you won't like (based on the job duties) to get out of a situation like mine? I'm tempted but then I don't want it to look like I'm job hoping when I continue to look for another position.

Yes, I would take it...if it's hard to find a position in your field, you could be there a while before something else opens up, unless you can afford to be out of work (which I know I couldn't!). And if you think your boss might try to fire you, I'd get out before that can happen.

I would not take a job if I had no interest in it.

I went ahead and confirmed the interview. My coworker asked if I would be more miserable doing event planning or working for my boss. There's no way having a job that I can definitely do, but I'm not interested in - is going to be worse than the constant anxiety, dread, and hate that I've felt for the last year+.

I agree with that thinking...mental health is so important and if you can happily go to work without dreading your boss, even if it's boring or uninteresting, it will probably be an improvement.

Re: How to handle horrible boss?

Yep, definitely do the interview at the very least.
And to be honest, the way your boss sounds, working in a coal mine would probably be better so....

How to handle horrible boss?

OMG, you guys - the day has finally come!! I got another job!! It's a lateral move but instead of being on the health system side, I'm moving back to the university side. It's doing stuff I think I would enjoy (unlike the one I interviewed for last week).

I was nervous b/c the hiring manager wanted to speak to my current supervisor before offering me the job. I was afraid my boss would trash me b/c she's so unstable, but thankfully she saw that this is a great opportunity for both of us!

I have to give 30 days notice (it's standard at my university) but I'm fine with it so I have time to wrap up projects I've been working on.

All the sadness, confusion, anger, and anxiety will finally be over! No more ruining my Sundays b/c I dread coming to work on Monday!

YAY!!!!
