Sectional/Modular sofa

It's time for a new sectional for my den. The one we are replacing, we bought at Raymour about 10 years ago when we moved in. I never loved it and it's not the most comfortable.

The area where the sectional needs to fit is long and narrow, we are looking for a "L" configuration (what we have now) or a "U" with one end a chaise. The problem is the narrow end - everything ends up being too big or way to small.

Is there a place where we can put together a sectional piece by piece to design what we want without breaking the bank? The ones I find online are over $5K and the couch takes a beating since it's our main hang out area. I need to see it in person because DH insists on sitting on it before we buy.

Re: Sectional/Modular sofa

I just bought one recently.

What I found is that a lot of the sets are modular they just don't advertise them that way and sometimes the sales people aren't well informed...

We looked at Ashley, Raymour, Bobs and Macys. Ended up going with Macys and took lots of measurements and pretty much created the set we needed. With the protection plan and 6 pieces (recliners included) it was about $3300ish.

I know this will be far for you, but I got my sofa in NJ at the Flemington department store. They have a lot of modular sofas. I got the Rain sofa and am still very pleased with it. It is leather, with 3 recliners, a solid seat and a corner. We spent less than 5,000 for it. The other sofa I would look at is steelcase. Or at macys they have a few sofas that might work.

We just bought the Wilcot Sectional from Ashley for about $3k. You could also checkout 5th Avenue Furniture in Bayshore they also sell discounted Ashley Furniture as well. If you have any questions please send me a message

Re: Sectional/Modular sofa

We got our customized sectional at lazy boy. It was made to fit the space exactly and we absolutely love it. It's comfortable and attractive and we practically live on it. Worth every penny, a little over 3k. When we were hemming and hawing about the price and they wouldn't come down my husband asked if they would throw in a floor sample of a lamp or painting or something and they agreed and I picked out a huge beautiful $$$ coffee table with storage.

Re: Sectional/Modular sofa

I actually got what I wanted at bobs. I was able to add an extra piece to a couch that I wanted. I have a very large living room so the piece I wanted would have been too small. I added an extra armless sofa and I love it!

Thanks everyone. I am going to drag DH out on Monday to look at basset (we got our bedroom furniture there and love it) and lazy boy. I stopped at Raymour on my way home last night and didn’t love anything. The sales man also told me I couldn’t really customize - which I doubt. I just didn’t like him.

I will also look at ashley. I am intrigued by the love sac but playing around online what we need would be well over $5k and we don’t want to spend that much

I was looking at a Lovesac that was fairly large and it was under $5k. I know they used to have a store at Walt Whitman mall - not sure if it's still there. Might be worth a look. They will configure and price it for you and give you options.

Re: Sectional/Modular sofa

We just got one at macys furniture in carle place. They are having sales for presidents day. They have papers for many sectional that show the possible pieces. We went home, measured, and then picked what we needed. Was able to call in the order and used my macys card-24 months no interest.

Basset not only lets you choose how many pieces and the set up. You also choose cushion firmness, depth, shape, and back cushion attachment and color and material. You also get to choose pillows (can be a different color and material). I had no idea there were so many choices.

We have the lounge II from crate and barrel. It’s super deep but they have similar options that are more narrow. We are obsessed with our sectional. Worth taking a look.

I dragged DH shopping yesterday. We think we found the one we want at Macy's.

The sticking point is the corner piece. We have the option of doing a 90 degree corner piece or a wedge piece.

If we do the 90 degree corner piece, the sectional will be: end table, chaise piece, 2 cushions, corner piece, 2 cushions, end table.

If we do the wedge piece, it will be: chaise (no end table), 2 cushions, wedge piece, 1 cushion, end table.

There will be an oval coffee table in the middle.

Thoughts?

Re: Sectional/Modular sofa

I got a sectional for the first time last year and we only have an end table at one end with a coffee table in the center of the L. I miss not having an end table to rest a drink on. Yes, you can use the coffee the table but we have two boys who are going to knock it over on the coffee table which is a big play spot for them. Because most people tend to sit in that one spot with the end table it's definitely wearing faster than the rest of the couch. Just something to consider.

I do love those wedge corners though.

I would go with the 90 degree corner - it sounds like you end up with more seating plus you can have an end table at both ends.

Is there a down side to the 90 degree corner?

I want the 90 degree corner. DH wants the wedge piece. He keeps saying that no one can sit in the corner piece because there's nowhere to put your legs. With the wedge, there's room for a person's legs.

DH rarely has opinions about furniture, etc., but when he does, he digs in. I don't know why he cares so much about this. I just really don't want to lose my end table and lamp!!

I get what your DH is saying, but even if you consider the corner piece a "non-seat", you still wind up with more seating with the corner piece (plus the end tables on both ends). Sounds like the way to go to me
