What's your witholding status?
Curious what you all withhold, because both me and dh were married-0 and owed abt 3k this year :( We both just switched to single 0 and I'm wondering if this is what most people have on their taxes. Most of my friends who get the tax refunds of close to 10k said they claim single 0.
I don't really care to get a major refund, but not owing would have been nice!

I claim Married 0 (I make more), and my DH claims Single 0. We received a decent return back, but ours is a pretty simple return

it just sucks all around.. I have never had to owe. I'm a teacher and Dh's salary is pretty comparable to mine, so we are by no means "rich." I really examined last year's return vs. this year's and the total itemized deductions exceeded 40k for last year's return. This year's was about 20k in deductions. horrible.

My accountant said it’s because people are getting more back in their paychecks than they were before.

We claimed 0 and used to still get hammered. We started paying estimated taxes quarterly 2 years ago and it helped. We are actually getting a refund this year

We use to claim S 0 and use to get back a substantial refund every year. With the tax changes we are getting less in our paycheck due to the tax bracket which is opposite of of what most people are experiencing. We changed to M 2 because we needed to make up the money we were losing in the paycheck and we are now getting back a modest return.

i just don't get it. I know we were getting more in our checks, but not that big of a difference to cause a 6k difference. We usually get a refund of about 3k, now we are owing 3k. I think it's a mixture of the itemized deduction limitations, the extra amt in our paychecks, the 10k property tax cap, and a few other things. I am pretty shocked that it's affecting people THAT much, though.
My friend and her husband usually owe about 10k/year because of their high salaries, but this year they got a 4k refund. She said it was because trump raised the alternative minimum tax to benefit those to make between 250k-500k. She's a huge democrat and is pretty sickened to see how it's benefitting her and hurting the middle class.

Both of us are married 0 but withhold at a higher single rate... I’m doing my taxes tomorrow and I don’t even wanna know what will happen. I have a house and 2 kids but that means nothing with this new tax stuff . I had an estimate done Over the summer my accountant expected us to owe about 4K so we started taking more out each paycheck. I’m really hoping we break even. Even if I owe 1k, I can swallow that....I think we are better off just not working

DH did everything himself and when he got the numbers I freaked so I made him send everything to the accountant and it turned out that he was not only right but now we owe $500 more in federal AND we have to pay the accountant $650.
I didn’t notice any more in our paychecks.
I’m sick over this.

if you're both witholding at the single rate you'll prob be fine. Just to give an idea since you have the twins:
my friend and her spouse make about 155k combined, claim married w/ the higher single witholding, have two kids, paid 20k in mortgage interest last year, 9k in real estate taxes. they got about an 8k refund. She said it was because of the mortgage interest

We owe as I predicted when SALT was hammered it hurt us. I am just glad that last year we prepaid some taxes to take advantage of the law last year.

Thanks! We make more than that, I don’t know how the deductions work like if I can deduct professional expenses and we can both deduct union dues? We used to, now I’m not so sure? We have no where near that in mortgage interest. My interest rate is 3.1% and we paid a little less than 7k in interest last year, I don’t know if that will do me any good at this point, I’ll find out in about 12 hours

Re: What's your witholding status?
we both claim single 0. I upped my 401(k) contribution and have an extra $40 a pay period withheld.
We got less of a refund this year, but we both saw about an extra $250 a month in our paychecks so it all evened out for us.

we had 10k in mortgage interest, and my union dues were only good for the state I believe. You have a fantastic interest rate!!! didn't you just move? I need to know what bank you're with because i'm at 4.25 and have been waiting to refinance lol

Single 0 We got back what we were expecting. A little less than years past but our income went up drastically. I wonder what it would have been with our old salaries...

Re: What's your witholding status?
We claim 0 single and are getting back 60% of what we had gotten back the past 7 years. I’m devastated - we are both teachers who don’t have an option at work of 12 month paychecks ans basically we won’t be able to pay the mortgage this year. The monthly increase in paycheck is nominal compared to the refund difference. I’m sick to my stomach and rip roaring mad at anyone who ever supported a republican. Imo, republicans stand for rich and racist.

This is such an ignorant statement and coming from a teacher no less. SMDH.
Were you depending on your refund to pay your mortgage?? If so I hope you don't teach economics.
OP: We claim married 0. This year our estimated refund is slightly less than years prior.

Jellybean, care to back up why you think she's wrong?
Because she's not.
Republican politics - factually, historically, morally, ethically, literally (not figuratively) - are for the wealthy, the white, the racist, and the people who believe that you just need to work hard and pull yourself up by your bootstraps because everyone has the same chance in life and if you have it hard, well, it's you own damn fault.

So as oppose to what? Should you not pull yourself up by your bootstraps and make a better future for yourself and your family? What do you suggest that people live off the system and continue to be victims? I'm not saying that there are not injustices because of course there are they will ALWAYS be but by far and large Americans have vast opportunities in this country to make something of themselves. Why do you think so many people want to immigrate here? Why do we have so many immigrants here who have built successful businesses? I hate when people push the victim mentality.
I personally refuse to make sweeping generalizations of people according to their political party but I will say this, both parties historically have implemented policies and beliefs that have disadvantaged people. Historically Democrats were the ones that opposed abolishing slavery. This is a historical fact.
In addition Democratic states impose super high taxation on the middle class and upper middle class that put us at disadvantages in order to over promise things to people who don't pay taxes. That is also a fact. That is why there is such a mass exodus of people out of NY, NJ, etc. It's the high taxes imposed by the state. Recently Cuomo even admitted that there is a huge budget gap and he doesn't know how they plan to remediate that. Those are your democratic policies so turning around and saying that being republican is only for the rich and the racist is ignorant.

Re: What's your witholding status?
we both claim single 0 and i withhold $20 extra every paycheck (i get paid every 2 weeks)
i def. saw an increase in my paychecks due to the tax change. DH i couldn't tell really because his paycheck is never the same week to week.
we got back a few thousands less this year but we were expecting it. i had my accountant do rough numbers mid year to estimate what we would get back.
i will note the only reason i got any money back from state is because i withhold extra money. if i didn't we would have owed. it never makes sense to me. i have always owed state ever since i was kid working!
