Stolen from another message board I go on - Is posting spoilers as your facebook status rude?
I go on another message board - an etiquette-related one (quite amusing.) Someone posted the above question today. The general consensus was that it's rude to post a tv show spoiler immediately after said show ends - day or two later - all's fair - but in this day and age, when many people DVR shows and time zone differences exist - do you think it's rude?
Personally, I do! I've had quite a few episodes of shows ruined because some people have posted spoilers as their status messages literally the moment the show ends that same night. I don't see anything wrong with writing a general message like "Can't believe what happened on Grey's tonight" - but I'm talking specifics.
Your thoughts?

I hate when people do that. Really I do. In this day and age of DVR's and busy schedules not everyone is sitting home waiting with baited breath for the results of Survivor or American Idol.
I can't tell you how many times I had stuff ruined for me like that.
I wasn't going to go on FB today at all because of this... I didn't watch Idol last night. (But that was a moot point anyway since the result was plastered on the cover of newsday! )
There is NO need to post that as your status. Seriously...is that necessary?

Personally, I don't think it's rude. If you live in the DVR world and do not watch a show live as it airs, then you should stay away from message boards where you think people might have messages posted.
Maybe my opinion is skewed because I don't use a DVR.
ETA: My boss did not watch AI last night, she DVR'd it. She was listening to the news as she got ready this morning and heard who won. She is not mad and she will still watch the whole show when she gets home so she can see all the performances and how things played out.

Not sure if its rude.. but defiantly UNFAIR.. not everyone can watch the show at the exact time on, so that sucks when your supper excitted to watch something and gets spoiled before.

This is how I see things
A spoiler is something you know will happen before it airs that the majority of people don't know, like next week character XX will die.
Once things air the info is not a spolier.

I can't say if it's rude or not, but if there is a big show you don't want to know the ending (DWTS, AI, Lost, etc) you basically need to go into a cocoon until you are able to watch the show because the results are EVERYWHERE!
I was driving home last night around 10:30 and the DJs were talking about the winner of AI. So even if my intention was to run home and watch it at the first chance I had immediatly after the initial airing - I was too late.

Technically, it isn't a spoiler if it has aleady aired.
I don't tihnk I've ever posted about a tv show as my facebook status, but I think it if you are going to, you should be respectful of people in a different time zone & hold off.
If you DVR, you know what you are getting into & you should limit you internet use accordingly.

I learned the hard way that the only way NOT to be disappointed is to NOT go anywhere on the internet before the show is on in my timezone. I am 3 hours behind so ......It's just a fact that no matter what, someone will always post spoilers before I get the show "live" 3 hours later.

I definitely think its rude. I found out the hard way about what happened on a seaon finale of one the shows that I watched by someone's facebook status.
I feel like I have to avoid any media, newspaper, website, etc if I don't want one my shows that very day!

I agree with others who said it is not a spoiler if it already aired.
so no, I don't find it rude at all. if it already happened, it's history

My rule is that its a spoiler until after it airs on the west coast, then its fair game.

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say. A day or two later? No biggie. But if I happen to check FB at 7pm, and my friend posted the idol results when I was looking forward to the show starting 2 hours from now, something is ruined for me. I've learned to steer clear of the internet to avoid it, because I've learned from experience that I can't expect people to take my time zone into consideration.
ETA: Just realized I didn't really answer the question I don't think it's rude, but I do think it's inconsiderate. That said, there's a time limit. I think the next day, it's fair game.

Personally I don't care, but I have friends on the west coast who get fustrated because if they are on FB they find out what happens before they even have the opportunity to watch....i.e. AI Finale

I don't think it is "rude" necessarily but I wish people would not do it. I had to work last night and missed the finale and not even thinking the winner would be on someones status I saw it and it ruined it for me. Eh at least now I don't have to watch 2 hours of fluff to find out the winner.

Yes! I hate it.
I didn't even bother watching the last two episodes of American Idol because so many people posted spoilers. Its just considerate & not the done thing!

Same here! People should be aware that they might have friends in other countries that don't get to see the shows for a week or so!

Re: Stolen from another message board I go on - Is posting spoilers as your facebook status rude?
No I don't think it is.
I don't think because I chose to watch TV on a delayed status that people should have to change their responses to a finale or not have conversations with their friends on FB.
I wouldn't post a spoiler as a FB status, but I also think if you can't see the show live, it's a risk you take.

nope, it's fair game.
Facebook is a live, constantly updating site...i'd EXPECT live updates in statuses!
If it's important to me, I just keep the computer closed until I'm done watching the show. Not too difficult.

What about the poor folks in Hawaii? Everyone forgets about them....
Newsday and CC do spoilers all the time, which I really don't understand. If they just put the headline as "Latest star kicked off DWTS", then you'd have to click on the link to find out. They want you to click as many things as possible on their site. If they didn't put spoilers in the titles, they would get more clicks on their sites, and people wouldn't get accidental spoilers. The way they do it now, everyone loses...

Re: Stolen from another message board I go on - Is posting spoilers as your facebook status rude?
I think it's inconsiderate. We all know that plenty of people DVR shows, and that there are people in other time zones where the show has not yet aired. I will post things like, "I am not happy with the AI results," or "I loved the Gossip Girl finale", but I would never post what actually happened. There's really no need.
That said, if I don't want something to be spoiled for me, I stay far away from the internet!
