Toilet training

Seriously give me all the tips. My kids know how to use the potty since 20months now at 26 months I’m pushing the full potty training. They were more dry wearing diapers and using the potty then the underwear and one just peed in my laundry basket Chat Icon I have done tons of toilet training programs and work and have worked with a lot of research in my professional life and figured it would work for my kids. I always do underwear with a pull-up over the undies and it has always been successful for the kids/ older adults I’ve worked with. My twins... nope... any other advice is welcome!! I do give m&m rewards and they only have access to m&ms during that time. I currently have my dogs wee wee pads on my couch for fear of what they may do to it!

In my experience I had to wait until my daughter was ready. She fought me hard each time I tried to train her. So I just waited and a few months after she turned 3, she went and that was it. No hanging out in the bathroom 24/7 etc.

I did the 3 day method with 3 very different personalities. It worked well... but yes, you get pee on the floors and sofa for a few days.

Same here. Dd1 drove me nuts bc she was socially very mature, very verbal, stayed dry overnight but she just wasn't willing until she turned 3. With that said, it was the easiest process, one conversation and she was trained.

I tried earlier with dd2 to see if I could train her before the fear set in. She was fully out of diapers before she turned 2 but she had so many accidents for the first year. She's 4.5 and she still has accidents sometimes!

I used the three day potty training method with my two boys. They were over three though.

At 26 months, I would not push it like that. They will get it when they're ready and you don't want to pressure them. If not, by three years old, I started pushing my boys.

I waited until they were ready and it was actually really easy. We have very few accidents with both of my children because I feel like we did not push them.

One thing I would do is get rid of the pullups. It creates a false sense of security with the underwear. Let them get wet and feel uncomfortable in underwear when they have an accident. Having the pullup there kind of defeats the purpose of the underwear.

Re: Toilet training

Just like anything else I had to conquer in parenting- getting rid of the bottle, getting rid of the pacifier, toilet training- when she was ready it was super easy and quick- when she wasn't it was an utter horror show nightmare where we both suffered emotional scars.

When they are ready, it will be a breeze

They are definitely ready, they ask me to change their diaper even if they are slightly wet and they know how to use it, when to go etc, it’s just not sticking! They don’t resist or refuse 99% of the time, they just don’t ask to go and they have pretty advanced language skills and understand where to go to the bathroom they just don’t! I use the pull ups because the underwear are on first and closest to their body so they are feeling they wet, I use the pull up so it doesn’t get everywhere. I did have them in just undies for 3 hours with no accidents before their nap so hopefully we are making progress

At that age they can be potty trained without self initiation. My middle one is 29 months, and has been trained for almost 7 months. He still only initiates about 50% of the time. The other 50% is still me making sure he goes every hour/two Hours.

I agree with this. Just take them to the bathroom every hour and eventually they will start asking to go when they need to. Ditch the pull ups completely, except maybe for overnight.

My daughter was trained super fast with the 3 day method a little after 2. My son was a horror! I tried the 3 day method many times. It never worked for him. I waited a while and then he just did it perfectly one day. So if it seems like more of a headache then I would wait a bit longer.

Toilet training

You say they are ready but then say they aren’t doing it. Sounds like they may not be ready. You have to take the pull up off. They know that they can just pee and the diaper is there.

Toilet training

It just wasn’t worth the yelling and crying and accidents to me. I waited until my kids were ready and they basically trained themselves at about 3yo. They told me they wanted to use the potty and never looked back.

I also wasn’t a fan of having to ask and bring them to the bathroom every hour for 6 months, especially in public. Changing diapers is easier Chat Icon

That's what I always said. I never understood the rush to potty train early. Like...why?

I agree with this completely. I tried the 3 day method twice with my oldest. First when he was a little over 2 (before my second was born), and it was a mess, he didn't get it, he was so upset about peeing that he'd run all over the place, he was crying because he was so confused by the pee, etc.

Second attempt was in the summer after the second was born, he was a little over 2.5, but he didn't want anything to do with the potty. He showed more control, but just refused to use the potty.

Eventually right before 3, daycare put the pressure on him, and all his friends were starting to get it. Peer pressure worked. It was like it all clicked for him too. He has had maybe one accident because he has really good control. Could immediately tell us when he needed to go, and hold it long enough to make it there. I think he both needed to be physically ready, and then once he had that down, it was just mentally getting him there.

My second is starting to show interest in the potty at 22 months, but I'm definitely not going to push it this time.

I waited til my son was ready. For us, that meant he was 5 years old. But before that it was just a nightmare.

For me, it's because 2yr old Sh!t diapers are terrible. I couldn't!! I can't even imagine what a 3yr old diaper is like. There is also saving money! LOL.

True but even when I forced the matter, DD wasn't shitting on the potty until after her 4th birthday.
She had pee down with not even ONE accident even at night at around 2.5.
But poop is a whole other story.
So it really didn't matter.
I could have trained her at 15 months and I'd still be changing shit diapers at 3 years old (Or in her case shit underwear. Even better! Chat Icon )

I mean, there’s a slew of reasons.

It’s better for the environment.
Dignity for the child.
A sense of accomplishment for the child.
The cost of diapers.

I know people who have waited, and then been in a pickle bc school required them to be trained and they weren’t. Starting earlier can give them time if they’re having trouble.

It doesn’t make sense to me to do it before they can self initiate. I didn’t have time to be dragging her to the bathroom every half hour. I couldn’t imagine having to do that with twins!

A lot of people say their daycare/school helps but I actually found the opposite to be true. DD only had one accident but the other kids in her class would be fine all weekend and then have accidents left and right during the week. The school was actually pretty terrible with it and a lot of parents were complaining.

As for actually training, we didn’t do much beyond be princess potty book and the stickers/crown that came with it. She was about 2.5 when she was fully trained. I’m normally a pusher with most things but this I let happen on its own.

I am not talking about waiting until they are 4 or 5.
I am talking about the rush to train at or before 2 years old when they are clearly NOT ready.
I don't know many 2 year olds that have much dignity to be honest....
Chat Icon

And my DD was trained early because daycare trained her. But again, if she wasn't ready I wasn't going to push it.

I mean the first road trip after she was trained was horrible. We had to stop at nasty rest stops constantly. I so missed diapers at that point.

My 3 year old screamed “I have to go to the bathroom” across an indoor pool yesterday. No dignity. No shame.

Also, re the environment. See #1. We’re practically granola munchers with our only children, Nell. We’re doing our part.
