Re: Cape May vs Wildwood
We have done both. When doing Wildwood we stay in Diamond Beach- next town over but it's quieter and more residential and quite frankly, less trashy. You can drive over to Wildwood when you want to do the Boardwalk or go to dinner etc.
Cape May is a whole other feel. I love it too. It's more Victorian, more quaint, but less action. (No boardwalk etc)
They are both great vacations, just different feels.
We stay at Icona Diamond Beach and Icona Cape May. The Cape May location is smaller and less lively. (you also have to pay to use the public beach and there is no onsite dining) But it's a beautiful, well done, little hotel. The Diamond Beach location has a private beach, beach bar, poolside service etc. More like a resort vacation and more going on.
Whats nice about Cape May is you can walk everywhere- tons of restaurants an etc in walking distance.
Staying in Diamond Beach there is less in walking distance but I still prefer it to staying in Wildwood.

I wouldn’t stay in Wildwood unless it was Diamond Beach or maybe Wildwood Crest. Wildwood can be sketchy/trashy. Cape May is awesome and just a ten minute drive away from Wildwood. Cape May is centralized: restaurants, beach, stores, mini golf. It is more quiet too.

We usually stay in wildwood crest which is older but not as sketchy/trashy as wildwood. Usually a 10 block walk to the beginning of the boardwalk.

Re: Cape May vs Wildwood
We have stayed at the Starlux, which is a super cute, retro hotel. It's a Morey's Piers hotel, which means you get an excellent discount on the tickets to the piers. The hotel itself was great, not sketchy at all. There is mini golf next door, and the pool is nice. We have also stayed at the Blue Palms (another Morey's hotel), and THAT one was sketchy. It was much closer to the "action", and I didn't care for it at all to be honest.
