How inconsiderate is this?
DD is in dance--there are three recitals-you only go to the one that your child is in (On a Saturday afternoon and evening and then on a Sunday afternoon. ) the evening one is at 7pm and there is a mix younger kids - 3 yr olds and older kids/adults in that time slot. They try to even it out as much as possible. No one says anything of the parents wants to pick up their kid up after they perform--I've done it. There is no Sunday night performance.

Totally ridiculous! All of these activities have gotten out of hand and don’t consider the developmental stage of the children. These companies take themselves way too seriously.
OMG yes. My daughter took dance a few years back and one of the girls in her class was SCOLDED by the teacher for getting a haircut a few weeks before the recital because her hair could no longer go in a bun on top of her head.
She was 5.
Needless to say, we didn’t go back to that dance school.

LMFAO I WISH that bitchh would have scolded my daughter for something like that. I'd probably be arrested. And how can you scold a kid for getting a haircut? It's the parents who take them for haircuts and decide when they go and how much is cut- not the 5 year old. Scold the parent instead. Oh but that's right, she was probably scared to scold an adult because they would tear her a new asshole. Easier to scold a 5 year old to make yourself feel more powerful. Loser.
In the scheme of life, nobody gives a shit about those too tight buns they wear anyway. Move on

I’ll be honest...we are a dance family and this is pretty much the norm. I’m our school they split the kids up age wise so each show has some from every age group (the only exception is the 2 year olds that I think they only put in the day show and they can leave at intermission). No one else is permitted to leave before the finale. I hated (and still do) when we have the evening shows because ours can run 3+ hours, but I think it is not uncommon. Some schools have different setups, so I would advise that if you don’t love the setup of yours, try another out before you get in too deep...we have a local school that does recitals every other year and it’s much lower key...sometimes I think that would have been a better fit for me, but we are already way too involved here so I suck it up for my daughters.
Ours operates like this too. We had the late show this year but there's not much I can do about it so I suck it up!! I'd be pissed if it was a Sunday night though. That's kind of ridiculous for all kids, not just little ones.

I’m actually holding off on cutting DD’s hair until after her recital for this very reason. I guess I’m making the right decision?!

Insane, they really need to understand that they are providing a service. I pay your check, sometimes these establishments act like they are doing you a huge favor.
I understand Dance can be intense and competitive but not at 4-6 yrs old. Lets get a grip.
OP - I probably would have asked my son if he really wanted to do it and if he said yes take him. But then I probably wouldn't enroll him in that school again. That is ridiculous, if I read it right 8pm is the intermission? So basically she is going on at 8:30, 9pm? Who wants to do that sh!t at all, especially on a Sunday.

I was going to ask Lauren82 that question, if the recitals are on a Sunday? I think that is what makes it very inconvenient and inconsiderate for that age. Especially, it seems like this dance school doesn't have a mix of age groups but rather the adults going first. I feel like that did that on purpose to force people to stay and watch them since their kids are in the later time slot.

I think they make everyone stay for two reasons. 1. For security reasons. Basically once the kids are backstage they are responsible for them. So if parents want their kids dismissed it creates a security issue.
2. If everyone leaves when their kid is done then there's no audience for the kids that go on later.
I think the school needs to make sure they have it at a fairly convenient time. 8pm on a Sunday night isn't convenient for ANYONE.

Re: How inconsiderate is this?
My daughter's recital is on a Monday night. Does it stink, yes. But if you have a kid in dance you basically go in with the understanding not every kid gets Saturday at 11 am. There are just too many recitals, graduations, etc to accommodate everyone.
If you don't like it, do something else with your kid.
As for taking your kid home, I think that is really rude. These kids practice week after week to do their, and you are basically saying I don't care about you. I don't care about your kid. I find that behavior so incredibly selfish.

How inconsiderate is this?
This is our first year doing dance (I think it may be our last since DD is not too into it but we shall see.
That said, our school has two separate showcases - one for the little ones that is about an hour and 20 minutes long total and then another for the older kids that is several hours long. They are both on Saturdays.
I have been to several other dance schools recitals where they are 3 hours+ and to me it is simply overkill. Way too many numbers (many of the same students in different dances), even if parents didn't pull their kids out after they went on stage people leave or are barely paying attention after a certain point. These schools need to cut the number of acts or combine the same classes. No one wants to sit there for 4 hours watching this, I don't care what anyone says.

Re: How inconsiderate is this?
It is inconvenient but it is one night. I have been involved with running a dance program and there is a lot that goes into it. Several kids are in various numbers and in order to give them time in between to change there are only so many ways a schedule can be made for the show.
If this was the only thing that you didn't like about the entire experience I wouldn't let performing late on one night stop me from letting my child continue in the program if they enjoy it.

Agreed.
I knew all about dance before i got my daughter in it. That one night is not a big deal to complain about. Wait till your kids like it so much that you are spending hundreds or even thousands on competitions, costumes and trips.
If your daughter isn't in to it then move on. If she is, then know what to expect beforehand.

I don’t like it. And I will be doing something else with my kid like I said in the earlier post. And you’re right, I don’t care about watching the adults who are not professionals do their routine. I thought it would be a nice activity for my Child to be involved in and it’s been a hot mess from the start. There are only 3 kids in her routine after half the class dropped out. But I stuck it out until the end to show my child when you make a commitment you stick with it. But hey that’s me being a selfish parent right? Because I would like to get my 6 yr child in bed before 10 pm on a school night? You sound like you take yourself a little too seriously

Some kids drop classes. While it is nice you stuck with the class. I think ducking out early sends the wrong message, and its rude. By the fact you attacked me, I can tell exactly the kind of person you are too.

We don’t have any on Sunday, but that is because it is Father’s Day weekend, so they don’t have any that day at all. I wouldn’t at all be surprised by a Sunday night performance at my school...I think evening are difficult with little ones no matter what and that’s what I would take the most issue with personally.

You have no idea what kind of person I am. You are the one who “attacked” first so to speak by saying how rude and selfish it is and saying “don’t like it then do something else with your kid.” I simply came on her to ask a question, as it’s the first time we have been in dance, and about 90% who responded said it’s ridiculous and rude on behalf of the dance teacher and would pull their kid out after their routine. And by the way I failed to even mention the recital is at a high school that is at least a half hour away. So there’s that too...

How inconsiderate is this?
Sunday evening is inconsiderate to all families and children. Our dance studio listed the time of the recital when we signed up for classes. We knew if we'd have a daytime or an evening so we were prepared from the very beginning. Never on a Sunday night though.

Re: How inconsiderate is this?
Very annoying and inconsiderate. How can a young child be expected to be awake and ok at that hour, especially on a school night.
And I really don't get why grown adults need to be included in the children's recital. That is really very weird to me.

Re: How inconsiderate is this?
Very Seasoned Company Dance Mom here... I find it absurd that your young child is dancing that late. Even if you'd competitively dance, the younger you are, the earlier you'd compete. We have 4 recitals, the little ones are sprinkled here & there for the "Cute" factor but mostly dance Saturday & Sunday morning. Don't totally pull her from the dance recital, do what you committed to do & then when she's done- leave. I'm sorry to hear that she won't continue dancing, there are definitely more Pro's than Con's in the grand scheme of things: they learn time management, improve memory skills (not easy to remember 12+ dances) stay incredibly fit, learn to work as a team & have the love and support of a second "family". My 2 girls dance 4-5 hours a day & are both straight A students, NHS. Neither will EVER become professional dancers but thats understood..just like most of LI will not produce 100% of this nations LAX or Soccer players. I could swallow the late nights, but there is no way in Hell I'd be watching adults (I'm assuming teachers) in multiple dances!
Edited to add: Why not speak to the owner of the school (not the teacher) lots of times..they are Moms too, they get it. It could be an oversight. If you'd get together with the other 2 moms with students in the number & they also agree, you could collectively express your concerns. I'm sure the studio owner would rather change the time than have possible "no shows".

Thank you! I thought I was the only one who found this to be strange. Why would anyone want to watch adults dance at a kid's recital?
