Spinoff to DMV appointment post
Do you NEED to have an enhanced license?
I understand that in order to travel in the US you will need it or you could just use your passport, right?
I just don't have the time to go to the DMV, even with an appointment.
I want to just renew online but I just want to make sure you don't have to have the enhanced licences.

I believe as of 2020 you will need either an enhanced license or a Real ID. An enhanced license will cost $30 in addition to your regular renewal it will be needed for domestic air travel and in addition it will allow you to cross the border to Mexico or Canada and some Caribbean countries. A real id will be needed for domestic air travel.

Yes. Not worth the extra $30 for the DMV when I can just use my passport.

No. It is either you use the enhanced driver's license or a passport for domestic travel.

I went with the Real ID - it was the same price as the regular license and I had time to go to DMV to renew. You can’t fly after 2020 with a regular license but you can fly with Real ID or Enhanced.
And yes you can just use your passport and renew your regular license.

Re: Spinoff to DMV appointment post
After October 2020 if you keep your regular license you will need to take your passport with you to fly domestically or internationally.
My license was up for renewal so I made an appointment with DMV and I was out of the DMV within 30 minutes.

Real and enhanced are the same except that with the enhanced, you can cross by land into Canada and Mexico.

Re: Spinoff to DMV appointment post
Why the changes?? So, starting in 2020 you need to carry your passport with you just to travel within the 50 states like you're some kind of tourist and to access federal buildings?? Why are they peddling this new bullsht now? And why are there 3 options to choose from? So, what if your passport expired, you can't travel within the U.S. until you renew the damn thing?? Yeah this sounds unholy!
Next we'll need to go through customs and get our passports stamped by the state of NJ too Lol wtf

If you have the Enhanced license you won't need the passport to travel domestically or enter a Federal Building.
ETS: That's why I got the Enhanced. I don't like carrying my passport everywhere. Im afraid of losing it. This just happened to a friend of mine last week. She lost her wallet that also had her passport in it.

Because states have been lax in their identity requirements to get a drivers license, and the TSA wants to make sure that people are who they say they are.
I'll take more security when I fly. If you don't want to bother then get global entry or use your passport to fly.
You don't need to go through customs to fly domestic with a passport.
