Is there any sort of paid leave you can take in NYS for legal matters involving family?
I'm filing for sole custody of my DS and between appearing for court dates, getting my DS to appointments with his attorney, and the psychological evaluations that will be conducted for myself, my DH, and my DS, meetings with my lawyer, amongst other things I'm sure, I'm going to have to take a decent amount of time off from work in the coming months. I'm going to blow right through any vacation and sick time I have accrued at work. Is there any sort of paid leave that I can apply for through NYS that covers this sort of thing?

I’m not sure. I’m not even sure if this kind of thing would fell under FMLA. Could you talk to your HR department?

I went through the same thing the year I got divorced, but my job was very good about it. I rarely took full days off, I would take off half days, come in late, leave early and it all worked out.
Good luck! Sole custody is hard to get. I have sole residential custody and final decision making authority, but joint legal custody.

Thank you! Sorry, I mis-spoke. I'm filing for sole residential custody with joint legal custody.

You are probably overestimating how much time will you need. And no, I don’t believe there is any NY paid leave for personal matters. Try to take half days. Court dates will likely be full days but the meetings with attorneys probably won’t be as frequent as you anticipate.

I'm not sure if you work in NYC -- but if you do, this might apply (but it may run concurrent with your regular sick leave policy -- so you'd have to use that time)

See 1.3 for the purposes of the sick and safe leave act....
