Fever and Hallucinating

MY 8 year old son had a fever yesterday and got up in the middle of the night seeing things. He first got up at 3AM (when the Motrin wore off) with a 103 fever so gave him more Motrin. He went back to bed and an hour later got up and started talking so strange asking how cars got in his room and how they fit through the door. He was making silly faces. He is usually silly, but this was just weird. I did find it humorous and new he'd be ok, but it was weird. He said a lot of weird things and back to bed.
He did hallucinate once before on Tamiflu when he was 3 years old and stopped the meds. Hasn't since. He does sleep walk every once in a blue moon. Maybe once a year if that.
Just wondering if anyone had that experience. When I went into his room the 2nd time when he was acting weird his fever went down to 100.

Re: Fever and Hallucinating

I had that experience when I was little when I had a fever. I was around the same age. I don’t know if I was hallucinating, but I got up and went and peed in the refrigerator Chat Icon so I guess that was a hallucination of some sort.

My mom just kept an eye on my temperature. If you are worried, then it doesn’t hurt to see a doctor.

Fever and Hallucinating

I would talk to his doctor to rule out this being an allerfy to motrin, the Tamiflu incident I understand as that medication made me act INSANE lol It could be the high temp but the fact that he did it when he had 100 temp is why I think you should ask the doctor

I gave him the motrin at3AM when his fever was 103. He was acting fine besides being sick. It was an hour later when it went down to 100 that he was acting funny.
He's had Motrin before and never had an issue.

I would probably bring him in today if he's still sick. My ped says go by how the kid is acting and whether it seems appropriate for their temp. Hallucinating with a 100 degree fever just doesn't seem normal to me although it could just be that he was having trouble coming out of a dream.

I would definitely speak to his doctor about it. If he was acting like that when his fever was 103 I'd be more inclined to say it was from that.

My FIL recently had an episode like this- saying crazy things, talking to walls, jumping around and moving his legs in a weird way. It was scary and they STILL don't know what caused it, though they thought it might be from an infection. They did some neurological tests and are waiting on the results.

Re: Fever and Hallucinating

I feel like he may have been just talking in his sleep/coming out of a dream etc.
It may not even be related to the fever or illness.

That's what I was going to say. Sounds like just being half asleep and still "in his dream."

Yes. When I spoke with him later on he said he felt he was still dreaming. He tends to stay in a deep sleep longer and I guess with being sick he felt like he was still sleeping.

Thanks all! So he has the flu B. Ugh!! Hopefully will get better in a few days.
