Karate/Gymnastics/Dance Schools
Hi, So do you think kids’ schools like karate, gymnastics, and dance should be freezing tuition at a time like this? My DC love these activities, and I want them to return to them when possible, but what if that’s months? I don’t want to sound like a jerk and unsupportive of these fantastic businesses, but at the same time I’m shelling out A LOT of money for nothing right now.
What are your children’s after-school activity places doing?

My daughter does competitive gymnastics and I will continue to pay because we can afford it. The whole situation stinks but I don’t want them to suffer because of this.

These places simply cannot expect us to pay for an activity that’s not happening.
I’m all for supporting these businesses as well, but I can’t be spending a few hundred dollars every month when who knows how secure my or DH’s jobs are in the long run. We have to conserve $$ and look out for our family first.

My daughters dance school is doing a live stream dance class where they can all see each other, the teacher, and she will be dancing from the living room. The first one is on Friday. I wonder how successful it’s going to be??

Thankfully we’re on off season for soccer, but have received continual emails about the delay of spring season.
Ballet we’ve been out of for a week now, but we already paid our final tuition payment. They mentioned extending the year (it was supposed to end the first week of June).

I offered to pay before/after care for next week even though we will not be using it. My DH and I are being paid during this time and I know people who work in other jobs are not and I know they need the money probably more than we do... When we go back to before/after, I plan on getting both of his "teachers" a GC to hopefully offset the fact that they are probably not getting paid during this time.

She loved the class.

My son goes to Goldfish for swimming and they froze our accounts until they are open. I know it's hard for these places, but I can't see paying for a service I'm not getting.

I agree I just think that it depends on your relationship with the place. For example, my one daughter just started Ninja Warriors at a place, I will expect an opportunity for make up dates or something! But my daughter's gymnastics where she has been going for a couple of years and spends 9 hours a week, I will still support those people who have cared for her and helped her develop as a gymnast. The sad thing is a lot of these places are going to go out of business or they will have to raise their prices to make up for these losses.

Re: Karate/Gymnastics/Dance Schools
The gymnastics place we go to has a clause in their contract that allows them to deny refunds due to "closures beyond their control". Not sure if they have denied anyone yet, but I guess they can because we all signed the contract. They haven't been answering their phones, so I have no idea. It's a big place, but I'm sure it's still technically a small business. I would feel bad asking, but also want my kids to get what I paid for.
The gym my husband goes to is still auto billing him. He's pissed about it lol.

I'm happy to pay DD's dance school during the closures. This is the owner's livelihood and she has staff to pay. $100 a month won't bankrupt us.
Her school, on the other hand, is not paying their staff. I find that despicable. They're crediting everyone a week or something. I'd rather not be credited at all have have the staff paid.

I think they should be freezing tuition. Lots of people can’t afford it right now. Peoples lives have changed in a matter of one week. Families have gone from 2 incomes to zero. I think if you are in a place where you can afford to keep paying, maybe send her a nice check to support her employees. This whole situation sucks and there really is no good advice. No one knows what to do but this is gonna be bad for months, maybe years to come....

My daughters dance school just did its first week of virtual classes and I'm happy they decided to do it. My daughter enjoyed it and it was a taste of normalcy

I had paid for March. I don’t have anything on auto bill so I wonder if they will expect up to pay for classes we aren’t attending.

Our karate dojo froze tuition for now but, is starting to post things online.
For my son's piano lessons - they are happening via Skype or Whatsapp right now. It's not the same but, they wanted to continue instruction.
We signed my son up for travel basketball and they are going to start with virtual classes as well - I'm not really clear as if this is going to replace in person activities (which will greatly annoy me for the price we paid) or supplement.

Re: Karate/Gymnastics/Dance Schools
Our gymnastics sent an email today that they are freezing the auto pay and that some people have contacted them asking to continue to be charged to help them out, but he doesn't feel right taking money right now. He said whenever they open again, make up classes will be giving for the month of March- since we were charged for March already.

I was told we have to pay even though the gym is closed. That was as of last week. Who knows. My daughter is a competitive gymnast and we have paid for meets that were cancelled and doubt we will get a refund.

Re: Karate/Gymnastics/Dance Schools
I haven't heard anything from my DD's dance school (so far paid through March). I do know that I am expected to mail in DD's pre-k tuition payments still though even though she isn't attending school right now.

My daughter is the same and our gym told us that they will be refunding the meets we already paid for. So that must mean the gyms that were hosting them refunded our gyms. I think you should get your money back for that.

I think we should also, but who knows with some of these gyms! I don't know if you were scheduled for the Flip for a Cure Meet. But, we were, and they were still holding it up until the night before (when schools were all closed). Their website said "NO REFUNDS, MEET IS STILL ON LEAVE ELDERLY AND SMALL KIDS AT HOME". Until USAG put the kabosh on their meets system wide. Mine is USAIGC, and they were still going to hold it, probably until they got push back from other gyms. So yeah, we better get refunds. I get they rely on that money, but we shouldn't have to pay for something that isn't happening.

Re: Karate/Gymnastics/Dance Schools
Just heard from my DD's dance teacher. She is going to start putting up lessons on Zoom. At first for just like 20 min instead of her usual 45 min class. She still expects us to pay tuition.
