I saw an article that Boston University was the first to announce that they may not open until January but, they haven't firmly made that decision yet - just that it's a possibility.

So far I've only heard colleges put their courses online for the summer, nothing yet for Fall

there is so much uncertainty - many colleges are making contingency plans. there is no playbook here. i wouldn't be surprised if some colleges don't reopen right away.

I work at a nationally well known university and so far they've only announced that summer session 1 is cancelled. They've not made any announcements about what will happen for summer session 2 or Fall 2020. They've also cancelled all summer camps that are typically held on campus.

I do hope that colleges make this decision soon. I am about to sign an off campus lease for my daughter and I don't really want to pay for an apartment she is not going to live in.

Haven’t heard yet. It’s so anxiety inducing not knowing what is going on already

I've heard whispers about it, but nothing definitive. I work at Stony Brook University and am also affiliated with a university in Illinois. SBU has moved all of their summer courses online. I haven't heard anything about the fall semester yet.

Its to early for them to nix the Fall semester yet but I have heard from a number of people than various universities are telling people to be prepared for fall online learning.

Honestly if I was in college right now and they did that for Fall, I'd skip that semester.
I wouldn't be paying to learn online.
Eff that.
You could do an online University like University of Phoenix for less money in that case, I am sure.

I'd just take the semester off.

I wouldn't be surprised if grades school continue distant learning until the New Year.

My sister works for two different universities and they are talking about it...

We are going to have some very far behind, undereducated kids if thats the case.
And January isn't going to be any different. Height of winter and sickness season.
Maybe all of the 2021 year should just be remote in that case.
Nothing is changing in January.

Schools being closed until September is detrimental enough. Anything more would be truly horrific. On top of that, how are people supposed to work if their children are home?

I highly recommend NOT going to a for-profit university like University of Phoenix. The credits usually don’t transfer to accredited schools.

I got my masters degree at Hofstra. It was 100% online and it’s a good program.

Re: Is it true colleges that colleges already decided they are remote learning for the fall????

If schools move to on line then I have to be brutally honest, a lot of mid tier schools will close down. So many schools pride themselves on offering a school culture, and specific atmosphere which just cannot happen on line. The ivys and schools with large endorsements will survive, but smaller schools will falter. What will be the difference between on line at school x vs y, not much. People will want to save money for a semester and will say I am going to defer admission, or take a semester break, go to community college and transfer classes into the better school. Schools cannot charge what they were charging without justification. They pay adjuncts between $3,000 to $5000 a class. So how much will it really cost to run the school now? $7-10,000? No meal plan, no dorms, no athletic fees. If your kid is going to go to College on line, I would question every fee going forward.

If something game changing happens with the virus, it's sure to go back. But absent that, could you imagine the living, eating, and classroom arrangements of college campuses in the midst of a pandemic? It would be a disaster.
Some might defer. Most will need to keep their lives on track. It won't be as good online, but it will be temporary and it will do.

I hadn 't heard that yet- i work for a compay whose marketi is professors, so i read a lot of academic Twiter, but I have been busy.

I feel bad for freshman - ow do you start a whole knew experienceonlien? Can you add & drop after taking a few calsses, like you would in person?

I think in that case I might defer, but hten again, if you can't work, what else are you goign to do?

I have a cousin in law school- he has 1 more year. he said onlien school is going ok, but he lives alone, and moved out of state to go to school, so I feel bad that he is completely alone.

I don't think he would take a semester off b/c that is harder to do in law school than in undergrad, and he would still be in that apartment anyway.

My SD goes to Syracuse. It's $65K a year. I'm going to be pissed to have to pay for a semester of this online learning BS. I see what she is doing now and it's silly busy work along with self indulging professors giving lectures from time to time. Not weekly. She is in a specific program that has dedicated course work but she is coasting through now and I don't know what they will do for the fall. She is not in a position where she can defer.

If she was going to be a freshman, I would say defer for a year. Or go to Suffolk. To be paying $32,000 for her to sit in her room again is garbage.

Completely agree. Schools charge 25, 50, 75k a year and after seeing the pitiful state of remote learning, NO WAY would I pay that. It’s time for everyone to take a semester off of that’s the case. The cost is barely justified with in-person classes. To pay that for online BS courses would be absurd.

I wouldn’t be starting again in if I were a student again. If I went to a school that cost 65K, then I could probably afford to skip a semester. Then again university education is free here.

I also wouldn’t call professors or teachers “self-deserving”. There are a lot of things in a classroom that simply cannot be done online. This whole thing started about a month ago and it has been HARD on everyone, and also teachers. Having to learn how to completely do a job completely different in ONE month is tough. I know when I teach next week at my university (starts after Easter here), it’s going to be very difficult, especially when you teach teachers how to teach, lol. We were also given the choice to shorten our classes down or not do them some weeks. Cut them some slack, please. They aren’t being given busy work. It actually takes more time to organize this work and do more administrative work as well.

This pandemic is most likely going to have a huge impact on colleges due to enrollment. I'm sure enrollment numbers especially for private colleges are way down for the Fall. I know some of the local colleges already have hiring freezes due to anticipated finances and some have started to lay off.

My university said they’re not going to lay off people (if at all possible) but they’re not hiring and no one is getting a raise (if you already make above $50k).

I don't know, I don't really see what the big deal is. Lots of reputable schools offer online programs. It's not ideal but if I were in college I certainly wouldn't put myself a semester behind because of this. They'll also save on room and board fees.

This is assuming the tuition can be paid at all. Of course if the student can no longer afford the tuition then a break is needed.

ETA: what is a college student supposed to do all semester? Sit in their parents' basement and play video games?

Someone asked Trump about this yesterday. His answer was “I think schools will reopen.”
