LIRR & subway riders
I read a lot on here about everyone wanting things to open back up but don’t see anyone speaking about having to take the LIRR or subway.
I moved out to LI from Brooklyn in July. Normally I commute on the LIRR for work into the city. I started working from home in mid-March. After taking the subway for 20 years of my life there is not much that bothers me about the LIRR.
With that said I am not personally looking forward to having to start commuting again. The trains are crowded during rush hours & while its great that they are being cleaned overnight I don’t know what harm those chemicals may cause.
Just wondering if anyone here will need to commute on the LIRR or subway.

Same here. Nothing really bothers me much anymore, but I am start to freak a bit about having to be packed into subway or LIRR cars with no A/C and having to wear a mask!!!! Or even when trains get cancelled at Penn and its like wall to wall people, wearing masks down there when there is no air to begin with...scares me!!

I don’t take mass transit but I’m wondering since all of these people have been working from all this time if the employers would allow that to continue

I think a lot of jobs are continuing. My husband works for a massive bank, and they’re looking to make this a long term solution in one way or another.
Apple has no plans to re-open stores in NY as of now.
I know other major companies that extended work from home until end of August already

Re: LIRR & subway riders
It's going to be hard to distance people on public transportation. They'll have to disinfect more often. They could add more trains to the line to spread people out. That'll cause fares to rise, but they'll rise anyway. Add hand sanitizing stations. People wear masks. The best way to have less crowds would be if more companies that can fully function remotely continue to have their employees work from home. At least a majority of employees. Other companies can implement a rotating schedule. That would free up spots for people that can't work from home.

My husband won't have to go back in until September at the earliest. I think that the Railroads, buses and subways are 99.9% of the reason that we got hit so hard here so I feel like maybe they should be reevaluating mass transit before they spend all this time trying to figure out how to socially distance kids in a classroom.

The subway is the one thing that worries me. There is no distance on the train. Even if everyone wears a mask, I still will be wary.
I don't know what it will take for me to feel comfortable on mass transit.

I don't commute to Manhattan anymore anyway, but DH does. He's been driving in this whole time (he got a parking pass for the city from his job). I have no intention of riding the LIRR or subway for a very long time....like not until 2021.

My husband works for LIRR and when things open ridership will not be as it was- limited trains with limited number of people on board

This makes sense. I think a lot of companies will allow for staggered work schedules and work from home so I don't see the trains being as packed as they were before anyway.

Re: LIRR & subway riders
I am dreading taking the subway. I am going to draw out WFH as long as possible.
My office is in limbo- we sublet our space, but then didn't rent a new space because of this, so I mgiht not have to go back for a whie, but I think my boss is going to want us to meet face to face at some point.
