Question about masks (cloth ones)
In general there are 2 types (levels) of common disposible masks.
1. surgical masks
2. n95 masks - these filter even more than surgical masks
(I heard theres an even higher one than n95 but its not too common)
For those cloth masks that people sell online now, are there different types?
Like "XYZ material" filters more than "ABC material" ?
Or do most people just sell cotton and its all the same?
I feel like I need to mention:
I am not saying we all HAVE to wear masks
I am not saying masks help / I am not saying masks do not help
I am just wondering if there are different type cloth masks, or can I just buy any type thats offered.
I assume if there are multiple layers in the mask it would filter more, but I haven't noticed anyone mention something like "2 layers in this mask"

What matters is if you can blow out a candle or not. If you can, it’s too thin.
I have double layer and triple layer masks and either one, I cannot blow out a candle.

The ones I purchase were from techwearusa - local company. $15 each or pack of 4 for $50 when I purchased them. They seem thinner, but are soft and can’t blow through them
The others were given to me by my neighbor. His MIL made a ton for the hospital and had some extras. Have us a few. I love hers so much I told DH I want to buy material and pay her to make them for my employees. They are thicker but breathable, have metal at the bridge of nose sewn in and has a slit if you want to put a filter in.

I purchased a few different ones on various sites, amazon, etc and the techwear one is the most comfortable to me.

there is a difference in the fabric that is used.
woven is better than a knit fabric because knit stretches more allowing the space between threads to open up and allow more through
tighter woven fabrics would be the "best"... think your cotton canvas reusable shopping bag versus your husband's woven fabric dress shirt.
to help, many people do double layers of fabric (i want to say that most that are sold are made like this) and some put in some kind of opening for an additional layer and/or filter.
some have said that a coffee filter works great as an insert.
finally, if you make a no-sew mask, you're usually folding the fabric a few times to get it in the right shape. these tend to be the thickest/most layers.

Lol! You probably will be able to breath better, but that sucker is going to be hot as heck in the summer, if it ever comes.
I feel the same way with the masks. There’s no getting used them. Like I can’t breath, it’s hot and I’m suffocating. The rare times I have to wear them, I wear these thin cloth ones, because I slide it up and down. Or the face covering that sits around my next. They arent effective but idc, I just want to be compliant and able to easily take it off every second I can. LOL!
Idk how my DH wears them all day at work. I’m nervous about going back to work in an office and this being mandatory, I really don’t know if I could do it. I guess I should get a job first, worry about that later

I hate the disposable surgical masks, for some reason they skeeve me out, maybe its because I keep seeing people still throwing them on the ground.
I like my buff, because it is made of cloth, and I can pull it up and down around my neck, and washes very nice.

When the whole covid thing started (before people starting wearing cloth masks) I read an article that says "If you can smell something through your mask then it won't protect you"
True?
I have a couple of N95 masks from a few years ago (spread some chemicals around the house and needed it)
I wore one the other day (I think I put it on right)
When I inhaled it got sucked in (got tighter) so this must mean there's some kind of seal right?
But when I walked past someone smoking I could smell the smoke and when I bought food I could smell the food.
Does that mean the mask isn't offering protection?

The purpose of wearing a mask is not to protect yourself from getting the virus but to limit the amount of droplets you breathe out via talking/coughing/sneezing so that others won’t get infected. The mask is to protect others. The only way to truly protect yourself is with the N95/P100 masks and using social distancing.

We are not wearing masks in public to protect ourselves from getting sick but to prevent us from spreading germs we may be carrying
