Did anyone else watch yesterday when the reporter asked Cuomo about if colleges (particularly SUNY) would be able to open in September? He basically said he did not know and to ask him about it then (I guess meaning ask IN September) !?!?

He is the worst. Does anyone think he will keep NYS public schools closed in September? That thought terrifies me. Kids can't start a brand new school year remotely.

If the politicians are being guided by the scientists and public health experts, then good for them! When it is safe to open without creating another wave of needless death and suffering, they should open things back up.

In an ideal world, yes. The issue is that scientists and public health experts are not all in agreement. So which ones do you listen to? This is where it DOES get political. And also, as we all have seen, the scientists and health experts have already gotten so much wrong.

Also - everyone keeps saying “when it’s safe” but nobody has said what that means. Zero cases? Zero deaths? A full proof 100% guaranteed vaccine? When the virus magically disappears? None of that is ever happening.

Exactly. And the models are, unfortunately, far from correct (specifically, the University of Washington one which was heavily relied upon). If we keep setting fuzzy or just plain unattainable goals, we’re going to end up quarantined like this forever. I mean at some point none of us are “living” if this is it! lol

Your last sentence has been weighing on me.
If this is what our lives are to be like- I'd be more than willing to take my chances with the virus.

Yes. This is not living. Personally there is going to come a time, and soon, that I will remove myself from these quarantine restrictions. And I am not alone.

I'm starting to think about QUALITY of life over QUANTITY of life.
It's like someone who is kept alive by machines. Maybe they live to 100 but what kind of life was it?
Or a person who live to 90 but the last 20 years of their life they are in horrible pain, agony, loneliness, disability, maybe they can't get around, can't leave their home, etc.
I often say I wouldn't want to live that long under those circumstances

If staying locked up at home, no school for kids, no parties, no concerts, no vacations, no restaurants, no sporting events, no family, no weddings, no LIFE , is what is keeping me alive- well then perhaps I'd rather not be alive anyway.
And I should be given the choice.

That's really how I feel. I feel like I'm not living already. I feel like every day is a waste, and there is no hope. I truly feel dead inside.

I know. And something about the fact that it’s the end of April bothers me. We’ve now spent six weeks doing this, including the ENTIRE month of April. A month out of our lives, which are short enough, sitting here, not living, just existing in our houses. (Thank god the weather has been $&@$.). I am actually surprised there hasn’t been an increase in suicides - or has there been, but those don’t make the news. Guess I’m just being very negative today.

I'm sure there have been , but they will say they were COVID related.

Just read that Cal State cancelled in person classes for all of their campuses for the Fall. I am wondering if colleges here will follow suit. I think it would be very devastating financially for a lot of the smaller private colleges as they will probably see many students withdraw their admission and either take a gap year or go to a community college.

An update from my university (which is nationally well known):
Originally they just put a hiring freeze and said no one making over $50K would get a raise. But because the endowments took a hit in the stock market crash, summer camps were cancelled and no one know what's going on with classes in the fall....... they're stopping all contributions to our retirement for the next year and anyone making over $250K will take a 10% pay cut. So far, they've not had to lay anyone off, but I'm hoping the next round will be encouraging early retirement for people that are eligible.

NC colleges in my area just made a decision - classes will be starting sooner and ending earlier (around Thanksgiving).

Apparently they've also cancelled fall break so it minimizes the number of students travelling home and then back to campus.

It's a southern thing lol. But that's awesome.

Notre Dame is doing the same thing and I saw something today about Binghamton planning to go back too.

We've been told that Stony Brook won't make a final decision until June about the fall semester.

I did see where the University of Cambridge (in England) has decided that lectures will be online only until the summer of 2021, but smaller teaching groups will be able to meet face to face if they maintain social distancing.

This is exactly what Syracuse is doing! My niece goes there & my SIL posted about it yesterday. I’m happy she gets to go back!

I heard from my university last night - they're not making a decision until the end of June. (The ones that already made the decision are public universities and mine is private.)
