Meeting with my Sons School (NJ)
My son goes to private school in Nj. However, the school still has to work with Trenton, NJ and follow the same guidelines to open up. It’s not longer up to the Archdiocese of Newark. Yesterday, the principal set up a meeting to discuss September.
He said they will not be getting rid of specials and the kids definitely have to go back to school in September. Specials may be in longer blocks at a time to reduce the days, but gym, art and music will go on. He also said they are working on a hybrid model of distance learning and in class sessions. He will give parents who don’t feel it’s safe, the opportunity to decide if they want to keep their kids home full time. The remote learning will consist of teachers in the class room teaching over web cam. The remote days will not go on for 8hrs a day, as he says it’s unhealthy for a kid to be in front of a computer for 8 hrs.
He also stressed that the guidelines and allowances keep changing on how many people can be in his school and this is all he has as of now. As of yesterday Gov. Murphy lifted some more restrictions. He said by September the plan can change and be improved.
The principal also said he’s been working with both private and public school faculty members. I wanted to share because I feel like this may shed some light on what is being discussed in Nj behind the scenes.
I will be setting up a meeting with him because my son is not capable of sitting by himself and learning on his own. Regardless of the fact that he is in 7th grade. But it didn’t seem like anything was set in stone, so I was somewhat relieved. Still a little anxious but I feel better.
In my opinion I think it’s ridiculous that they are making the schools plan for September with the current restrictions. They should do projections and forecast what it will look like in September and give them those guidelines.

I would actually be very happy with this plan as if right now. I think it is a much more hopeful viewpoint compared to the gloom and doom rumors circulating.
I’m very hopeful by September there will be even more improvement!

It did make me feel better, which, is why I posted it. My son needs extra services and we had started the process but it was cancelled. That is what I am concerned about and I will have to work with his principal and teachers.
He did definitely say that it is changing, but this is what they are working on right now. I wanted to share since its straight from the horses mouth. Obviously, schools differ by towns but the faculty is discussing it together during this time.

That is great news! NYC public schools also came out yesterday and said the plan is still to reopen buildings in September, even if there is a hybrid model, they want them open in some form.
I know this can change, but my hope is that the numbers stay low all summer, and September ends up being a better situation than any of us could have ever hoped.

Just FYI, in NY we just got the guidelines for special education services for the summer and aides are allowed to work with the children, the adults just need to wear a mask. That was a huge sticking point because most of the children that go to school in the summer need direct support. Hopefully they are allowing the same in NJ if you were pushing for an aide for him.

Thanks for sharing the information. We never got passed the filling out the questionnaire stage, so I’m not sure what services he will get. But I’m sure it will be similar to what his brother had (my SS). More time on tests, pulling him out for math and reading etc. Focusing on school work is really hard for him and he isn’t disciplined at all to work on his own. He’s also not mature enough to stay at home for a whole day which is why he would’ve been in camp this year.
I’m looking for a job, so I’m going to try to push for full remote. But I’m sure it’s going to be tough to be picky in this job market. The principal also mentioned about the services for kids and making sure that it gets started again by September.
