Solar panels on the roof
Here's some pics of the solar panels on the roof. It's a fairly flat roof, 2 stories, on a slight incline, and the basement is relatively high above the ground, so it's hard to even see the panels. I held the camera over my head to get the photos.
I'm planning on putting solar hot water panels on the section of roof without PV panels. Image Attachment(s):

explain hot water panels?
do they look just like the panels you already have up?
it looks good, actually. my mom refuses to get them b/c she thinks they 'look ugly'. you can hardly tell on your house!
she has a tin roof too. that would be sooo condusive for energy making!

The hot water panels heat the water in the house so you don't need (or need much less) oil or gas for your shower, faucets, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. needs.
They will look different, and there are different styles, but I haven't looked into specifics yet. Too many other things to do around the house first..
The panels cover the roof, so the fact that it's tin wouldn't have any effect. Although, it would keep the roof much cooler in the summer, since the sun isn't hitting the roof, just the panels.
If I got the entire roof covered with solar panels, you would barely know I had panels. The only way you really notice now is that part of the roof doesn't have panels, so it looks more obvious.

I heard that metal roofs have the same sort of effect as having black shingles VS beige. they get hotter faster. so are you saying that the metal roof doesn't get the heat b/c it's covered by the solar panels?

Exactly. The sun never touches the roof, and there is space between the roof and the panels. It's almost like putting a sun shade or umbrella over the roof. Plus, it makes the roof last longer, since it isn't exposed to the elements as much.

Re: Solar panels on the roof
We bought our house with Solar panels for hot water. Just a word of caution make sure you have an antiscolding thing put in. Our water is HOT I mean could burn you hands. I am so scared when my daughter uses the sink. We have the protection in the shower. We have to adjust the temp in the winter and summer because of the strength of the sun. Our system is old though.

Re: Solar panels on the roof
that looks awesome!!! I envy your flatish roof that faces the right direction. Our house faces east/west & its heavily wooded here, so doing solar is a big project & involves sacrificing alot of trees

Looks awesome Shawn! We can't wait until we redo our house and get the solar panels for electricity and water.
