We just got hit by a deer!
I'm so shaken up right now.  And we're supposed to be heading up the island to go shopping w/ my mom... if we go I guess we're taking her car.
A BIG male deer w/ BIG antlers just came out of the vineyard, underneath the fence which was covered in netting (I still have no clue how he did this   ) and hit the side of our car.
Thank God he didn't hit my DH's car door- he hit in between the door and the bumper... and the entire panel is completely dented and the paint is peeling.  DH couldn't even open his door- so he had to climb over to my side to get out. We're both ok, but shaken up.
We went back (it's a farm field on both sides of the road for a loooonnng way) to look for him to see if we should call the police b/c I didn't want him to suffer and don't see him anywhere. I hope he's ok. 
I swear if it wasn't for bad luck, lately we'd have no luck at all.... but thank God it's minor things in the scheme of things- b/c we know things could be worse.

That SUX!! I alway get scared driving around those parts at night. Heck, I almost hit one on 25 in Aquebogue near the new large farmstand by the pond. Those suckers come out of no where. I am glad you are ok!

Thanks- It was right on Locust Ave. I think it's starting to sink in now, b/c I'm sitting here  for the deer.
ETA: They're seriously running out of places to live out here w/ all the developing going on.  We have a family of 3 that live in our yard (but no big males) and that was my first thought- what if this was their daddy. They just started coming here over the summer and I seem them several times a week now...

That really stinks, I'm sorry. I hit one up by my mom's house a long time ago, and I was heartbroken for the poor deer. Not to mention it did a lot of damage to my car...but I was really sad for the deer.

Thank you everyone.
Seriously Beth, I was thinking that tonight. At first I thought 'just our luck' but then after a little while I thought 'actually it was GOOD luck, kind of, because neither of us was hurt and if it had to happen, it hit the best spot on the car that it could'. It doesn't look like it did any damage to the engine and the door is fine, it's just the part on the side in between.....
So now I'm kind of thinking maybe our luck is starting to turn around.  Of course when I say that to my DH he tells me there's no such thing as luck and it's a blessing, which I believe also, but I'm Irish so I believe in luck too!

Ah! Glad you are OK though.
But I know what you're going thru. He may have ran off in shock. Hope he's OK too....but you really couldn't have prevented it!

that happened to DH last year. He was in the Pathfinder too. The deer ran away, we had $3K worth of damage.
Our collision guy calls him the deer hunter.
Glad you are ok.

Glad you are OK. DH tells me that at dusk to always drive slow because they are out and about. And he's right. We live across the street from a 60 acre farm and they are always running through there. We used to have them in the back yard but DH put up an 8' deer fence.
Years ago at school in Westchester, my friend was driving back from NJ and a deer ran right into her car, I think she was on the Saw Mill Pkwy, it was just b/f Christmas. It totaled her car, and for the rest of the year it was "Claire got run over by a Reindeer". I think the male deer got up and ran away unharmed.

Thanks everyone.
We're home w/ a rental car.  We drove it to the place this morning and we didn't think there was any damage to the engine, but the guy (w/o opening the hood of course  ) told us to call our rep and tell them that he feels our car is not driveable and to find out if we have rental coverage (which we do)- so now we're home w/ a rental.
He said it's going to take at least a week from when the insurance claim person comes out to talk to him about how much the car is going to be......
