Dr. Hankin sounds wonderful! I can almost hear the sigh of relief..and like Sue and I have said...we never believed anyone was correct in throwing around autism as a diagnois. We know TJ well enough.
This is huge! I am so happy that TJ will get what he needs...properly.
And having stood on the sidelines and watched all that you have done to advocate and support him...everyone needs to know how wonderful you are. Every child should have someone fight for them the way you have for TJ

Thanks Ang!!!! You're gonna make me cry You have been a great support!!
His speech therapist did bring this up to me a couple of weeks ago when I met with the therapist and we spoke. She also felt he needed a full audiology workup but we all decided to start with the Dev. Ped and go from there.

Re: We met with a Developmental Pediatrician today and I think we may finally have some answers
i'm glad you are on such a good path to helping him! i'm an slp, the aud. will determine the auditory processing issue but the therapist he works with will need to differentiate it from a language processing disorder as he gets older. there can be disagreements as to how to treat it, particularly as the child gets to school age/in the classroom. personally, i don't believe FM systems do much for a child, unless there is a hearing impairment.

I'm not sure where you're located but I was just referred to the Center for Communication Care in Babylon:
Link
My daughter is on the autism spectrum and we suspect she has an auditory processing disorder. I got this recommendation from her former pre-school and it's supposed to be fantastic for diagnosing auditory processing disorders.
Good luck to you and Tyler!!

For an audiologist I highly highly recommend dr John Martinetti at port Jefferson speech and hearing. He has the latest technology.

ITA - I am so happy you are getting closer to getting an answer. You have been doing such a great job being proactive about this.

Hey Crissy! We are bringing Colin to a pediatric audiologist that my pediatrician highly recommended....her name is Dr. Cavuto-O'Mara and she is in NUMC in East Meadow! Our appointment isn't for a while so I can't tell you about her personally but I figured you could do some research about her and find out more....
So glad things are getting somewhere with TJ!

Ariel has an Auditory Processing Disorder on top of her other issues.
I highly recommend East Meadow Hearing And Speech Center.
East Meadow Hearing & Speech Center
Essentially they dont process what they are hearing correctly.
Please FM me if you have any questions....

Re: We met with a Developmental Pediatrician today and I think we may finally have some answers
I think its wonderful that you went to a developmental ped. to get some new answers...
I am a little bit familiar with APD...the term was thrown around a bit when johnny was close to 3 years old..he had speech and small sentences but a lot of similar things to what you mentioned....following multiple step directions was tough, we would ask a question twice for him to understand etc...
I think it is so so tough to know exactly what is going on with this category of kids who don't necessarily fit into the autism spectrum, yet have other obvious delays with speech/attention etc...its so hard to know!!
But you are doing a great job. It'll get better with time-and now that you have a term associated for it it's that much more help coming his way. You are a great mom, he will thrive!!!!
