It’s finally that time of year, officially kicked off a few weeks ago with the longer days, warmer weather and our first long weekend of the season. And, we all know what that means, the need to be outside, parks, beaches and backyard bbqs.
But, unless you’re living at my house, where were typically grilling veggies, fish, shrimp, and tofu, chances are you’re throwing some chicken, a few steaks, some burgers and some “pups” on the barbi.
But, if you’re looking to cook up some (healthy) fun, you may want to beware of dogs. According to experts, hot dogs and other cured meats may be linked with a greater risk for lung disease.
Research and researchers reveal that a regular and frequent consumption of cured meats was linked independently with an obstructive pattern of lung function and greater odds for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
And, they add that cured meats, such as bacon, hot dogs, cured ham, etc. are loaded with preservatives, and nitrites seem to generate reactive nitrogen species (molecules that cause damage to lung tissue) in a way that resembles emphysema.
So, while you don’t have to give up grilling or your favorite summer fare completely, it’s best to keep it to a minimum.
