North Hempstead took a major leap in efforts to preserve Long Island as we know it, and always have. In fact, it harvested the brunt of the almost $5 million granted to Nassau County municipalities by the state’s Environmental Protection Fund, to help refurbish local waterfront areas.
According to authorities, the 4.7 million granted to Nassau County jurisdictions went to the towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay, the city of Glen Cove and the Village of Sea Cliff with North Hempstead receiving over 2.4 million.
Officials suggest that the monies will be well spent on a variety of noteworthy local projects without putting any of the financial burden on the taxpayers.
It is noted that close to $60 million in protection fund grants were allocated in the 2007 state budget toward initiatives across New York, including waterfront revitalization, parks, recreation and historic and farmland protection and preservation.
North Hempstead’s grants were given for the following projects: rebuilding of Manorhaven and Bar Beach boat ramps; Roslyn Pond improvement, Long Island Sound dredge material management; Sheets Creek water quality improvements and planning and construction for Bar Beach Hempstead Harbor Park.
