For most of us the topic of hotels brings to mind musings of fanciful places with pristine scenery and an relaxing ambiance of lavish luxury, rest and relaxation. But, for some area locals, hotels, one in particular, is a hot topic of controversy.
In fact, recently, nearly 200 residents of West Hempstead picketed outside the courtesy hotel protesting the reported solicitous activity that goes on there.
From drug dealing to prostitution moms (and dads) are concerned about the neighborhood and their families. And, they are even more upset that local officials have been promising to shut down the facility for two years, but have yet to do it.
Now residents are petitioning for a more expedient resolve. And, that include a bid by Trammell Crow Residential to purchase the property and put up more than 200 apartments in the area.
According to residents, the closure of the hotel and the revitalization of the area would cut down on crime significantly.
According to police, authorities have responded to over 28 nuisance call to the hotel this year alone.
And, back in 2004 the town made an attempt to implement the nuisance law to rid the are of the hotel, but a ruling by the appellate court overturned the decision. In the same year, the state Supreme Court also ruled against a town injunction and restraining order against the hotel’s owners; which by the way could not be reached for comment.
