Anyone remember the commercial that stated “its 10 pm do you know where your children are?” Well, now local legislators are taking yet another measure to insure the safety and well being of your youngster. In an effort to “curb” kids from acquiring bad habits, Suffolk legislators recently approved a measure banning anyone under 19 years of age from purchasing non-prescription cough and cold medicines containing a popular ingredient known as DXM or dextromethrophan.
The measure comes in response to testimony of a half dozen youth and drug counselors noting the abuse of over the counter medications that can result in psychosis, brain damage, and even fatalit7y in those from 12 to 15 years o age who often use these non-prescription meds for what they term “robotripping” or “skttling”.
And, while officials note that the ban will not completely eliminate the “problem”, it will act as a deterrent for many.
But, more so, officials are hoping that the measure will encourage parents educating themselves and taking action; as well as getting Albany and four or five other states where similar proposals are being considered to take more immediate action.
According to officials, the health department will be responsible for implementing and enforcing the law, and anyone who intentionally sells to underage buyers and found guilty will be fine $250 for the first offense, $500 for the second and up to $750 for other offenses.
