Long Island is about to take another step forward on the technological and information superhighway. In fact, according to local officials, it's been proposed by Suffolk's Department of Information Technology (DIT) that Long Island create a wireless broadband system in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
And, county officials are lauding the effort for its potential to bolster the Long Island economy.
They note that Wi-Fi service will keep Long Island at the foreground of drawing attention to our communities and attracting and fostering cutting edge businesses and jobs while also enhancing Internet access for beach and park patrons and visitors.
However, according to local officials, the network won't be competing with other area businesses to sell wireless broadband. Instead, the proposal is geared at meeting a certain agenda including:
· Providing universal and affordable or free wireless broadband
· Improving services offered and provided by local governments
