We all know how expensive local property taxes are and can be. In fact, it’s likely we all lament and complain about them, but typically to no avail. But, for one Long Island community all the complaints have proven to be far from “in vain”. In fact, it seems that residents of Head of the Harbor Village were overpaying on their school taxes by about 10 percent, which, according to officials, resulted in adding thousands of dollars to their tax bills.
According to officials, most of those overtaxed were part of the Three Village School district within the Brookhaven town as well as home located in Head of the Harbor’s northeast corner of Smithtown. And, they add that overage was a result on an improper equalization rate used to compensate for assessments done differently by each Suffolk town.
So, what homeowners can expect is a reduction by about 10,000 to 15,000. And, according to state law, Suffolk County is required to issue checks for the overpayment.
